Overall, this is a rewarding career if you enjoy customer service as well as working in a fast paced environment. I would recommend this as nothing more than a "spring-board" to something else. The networking is excellent and upward mobility is almost guaranteed if you can get your foot in the door at a dealership. Most dealerships where I live are looking for younger help, because most people in the field are at least 40 years old. This is a great opportunity for someone to gain customer service experience. The cons are as follows: mediocre pay, high stress, and customer service.
As a career change from military to civilian, this is a relatively easy transition. It takes an outgoing personality and at least a general knowledge of automotive and truck parts and repair. While not a high-paying job at first, there is a chance for pay increases. The cons are dealing with picky customers and the subtle office politics. As salesmen, these people can smile while berating even the most wary customer and it crosses over to the coworkers.
The average American will hold 10 different jobs by the time they are 36.
