The best thing about my career is that I have the opportunity to help people who are going through difficult problems and make the process a little easier. It is very rewarding to help people. I enjoy the research I am able to do. The paralegal career can be very stressful at times as there are many deadlines to deal with and as people are facing problems that have required them to get an attorney it can be emotionally draining. I would recommend this career to anyone who is interested in helping people, is a good listener, has good communication and research skills.
I am the assistant to a very busy litigator who is also the head of our local office. You must be able to multi-task and prioritize quickly and efficiently. Speed writing or short hand is definitely a plus.
The pros to my position is that I am still able to have more of a family life as opposed to the attorneys with a salary that allows me to live comfortably.
The con to my position is that it is in a major city that I commute to and from.
But the reward of raising my family outside the city is worth all of it.
I don't believe that there are any secrets to this profession - it's pretty much an open book.
