I'm currently a homemaker who telecommutes on occasional work projects, from internet research to proofreading, writing, and working with words in general. These projects are temporary and don't provide steady income. This is a good situation for me, since I'm a stay-at-home mom of two kids and a husband who works full-time. Tips/advice: Be sure you can afford to take on these types of jobs - again, they're not consistent, and most don't offer health benefits. If you're in a situation where you can do it, though, I do recommend it, especially if you have to be home with your kids. The hours are flexible and there's no commute. Be sure you have a broadband internet connection. You also need to be self-motivated without someone looking over your shoulder. If you get lonely easily and like being around people a lot, this may not be the career for you - it's very solitary. However, if you're sick of working around people and dealing with office politics, then this could be perfect for you. Just know that you're primarily working for yourself and for the company as a consultant/contractor, so you have to claim all of your money made at tax time; no taxes are taken out of your paycheck. |

I love my job as an Administrative Assistant at a branch office of a University. I have a BA, though I doubt that it's really necessary. I do everything from student billing, registering students for classes, assisting students with financial aid, and helping adjunct faculty with their needs.
I would highly recommend this career to anyone who is a self-starter and enjoys helping others. A broad knowledge of general office practices (answering the phone, paying bills, dealing with the general public, working in MS Office) is beneficial for anyone considering this career.
I would definitely choose this career again. The pros are that I get to create processes that work, I get to help students, and there is great satisfaction in what I do. The con is the pay- it's not-so-great, especially for someone with a degree.
Many people wouldn't know that tthe financial aid process is so convoluted, but it is and I'm becoming very familiar with it through this job. |

First of all, I have worked in the administrative support field for over 6 years. I have worked for numerous organizations (military, state-funded organizations, entry-level startups and fortune 500) and have been successful in all facets at each. Being successful in the administrative field requires the abilities of being patient, self-servicing, and reliable at best. Amongst those qualities, an aspiring individual must be a team player wiling to work long hours to accomplish tasks as assigned.
I would strongly recommend a career in the administrative field based on my positive experiences at all levels of work. A degree in Business Administration would propel you into the supervisory levels, possibly as an Office Manager as an example, but being a seasoned certified professional will still look great on your portfolio. I would most definitely choose this career field again if the opportunity is presented.
The cons for a career in the administrative field is that you may be held in a position your in for a longer length of time than you may want. The reasons are various, no ladder movement capability or the boss might see you as such an asset that it would be viewed as a negative promotion instead of a positive. The pros are that administrative opportunities are always available because most professionals choose to move on with their careers or a company simply expands. Without a certain specialty, chemist for instance, it is easier to fit in to certain places because of the need for strong office administrative support.
What most people don’t know about this career is that providing administrative support can be very challenging and worthy occupation. What you see on see on television or movies does not accurately depict the importance of most of these positions. A President/C.E.O. of an organization would be unable to function without someone taking care of a certain percentage of his or her official duties. |

I work as a Program Coordinator and Graduate Program Assistant in a University department. I highly recommend office and administrative support work, *if* status and money are not as important to you as job security, working with people, helping people, and making a moderately good living. Office work isn't exciting, and in many places it isn't that fun, but in the department I work for I have a blast. My job is a combination of event planning, website maintenance, advising potential and current graduate students, faculty support, and working on a development committee -- all things I enjoy doing. Of course, I also have to do some things I don't enjoy: inventory equipment, for example, or troubleshoot the copier when it's broken. But over all, I have a great deal of autonomy on this job, and a lot of variety over the course of a given day. I also work with intelligent people who are doing important research and teaching work, and I believe in what they do. Another plus is that, for the most part, I work a 40 hour week and when I leave work I don't think about it any more. I work for the state, earn good benefits and retirement, and though I'm not rich, I do earn enough to support a family of four and pay a mortgage. Barely.
In other settings, being an administrative assistant has been awful. I've had some bad employers (either micro-managers, or tantrum-throwers), and that can make a job miserable. I find that there is always plenty of opportunity to take my skills elsewhere, though, if a job isn't a good fit for me. The thing about having administrative support skills and experience is that there are about a thousand different specialties that you can develop depending on what else you're interested in -- every body needs infrastructure support.
