I am a Voice Over IP systems administrator. This market is very hot right now, and is rising among high tech jobs as old legacy telephone systems are being replaced by feature rich voip systems. There are quite a few vendors active in this arena, but only a few stand out very prominently. If you are interested in pursuing this career field I would suggest looking into specific vendors such as Cisco, Avaya, and Digium. Both Cisco and Avaya do have certifications that would help to propel your career. Specifically the Cisco CCVP, and the highly coveted CCIE Voice, will just about guarantee a high paying job. The sales of VoIP equipment bypassed the sales of legacy PBX's just this last year, and the end of this trend is nowhere in sight. Since this job bridges both networking and telecommunications technologies, it will provide those who know it an edge over those who just specialize in one of those areas. One of the few cons of this industry is being seen by your peers as just a "phone guy", but usually those who do say anything like that don't really know what you do, and are probably not important in the big picture anyway. One aspect to be aware of in this and all computer tech jobs, is the rise in popularity of certain "open source" solutions that are emerging as series players in the arena. One such project is called Asterisk, and it is largely contributed to by the Digium company. Asterisk is an open source VoIP PBX that can be ran from a simple PC machine that is capable of running linux. In the future as this project matures, it could be a series competitor to several of the larger companies that charge an arm and leg for their products.

This is an excellent field to focus. The opportunities are continuing to grow. Whether you focus on the network side, software side, etc., as long as you strive to be the best in your field, you have the capability to go far. I've worked in numerous areas of IT, and have treasured the experience. Flexible hours and working environment are available, if you work with the right companies. The 'geeky' tag that gets assigned to this field isn't accurate, in my opinion. Quite the opposite.

This is a fast moving and busy career choice! Technology is constantly changing, and new issues, threats, and problems are constantly appearing. There is quite a drive to keep your skill set current, and as such, requires a great deal of flexibility and self-motiviation to stay on top. If you thrive on change, then this is definitely the field for you. If you do not like change, then consider a different field.

My profession is in the computer science field being an networking technician. I like my job because its always a challage and I learn something new all the time and can keep learning and growing in my field as much as I want to. I do not like it though because there is so much to learn and can be a bit overwhelming. I would chose going into being a computer network technician if you like to constantly learn,like logical problem solving, and are interested in electronics.

Pros:
-You often get to work with cutting edge technology that is cool and fun to learn about and impliment.

-You get paid decently... not the best paying career around, but definatly middle class income.

-If things are running smoothly and you have a handle on your network and systems, you can have lots of free time at work just making sure servers and network devices are running properly.

Cons:
-Often someone in this career will be on call constantly 24/7. You can potentialy feel a slave of your network and users on the network.

-Extremely long work hours if something is broken or you are implementing a new system.

The Grey Area (can be a positive and negative at the same time):
-You are in charge of ultra expensive equipment that keeps your business functioning. When something goes wrong, it brings your whole business to a standstill and can be very stressfull and costly to the company. At the same time it can be fullfilling to know you can handle such equipment and demands.

-There is a lot to constatly learn. New technology come out all the time and you will need to keep up on it. Certifications will have to be a lifelong study/test process. It can be frustrating retaking tests every year or two. It also can be a source of pride that you are constantly able to educate yourself.

Love it, though it takes a special kind of person... curious, technically oriented, and mature while still young at mind. Good money, although it can be a pain dealing with nontechnical people who don't understand what you do.

The field of network and computer systems administration is diverse and interesting. The rapid rate of technology advancement and adoption within the business community provides a wide variety of opportunities. It's not just for geeks and nerds anymore.
