If you like to work hard, play hard, and have your efforts mean something in life, then firefighting could be the career for you. Every day is different. Some days, nothing happens and it's very boring. Some days are so hot, or so cold. Some days are harder than you could ever imagine, physically and emotionally. You could get hurt, or killed, or see that happen to one of your colleagues. You'll almost certainly see distraught families, or people in various stages of death. But the rewards are overwhelming. You get to save people. You get to help them, help try to salvage a horrible day. You build a comraderie with your colleagues and form a strong sense of unity, of community. For the right person, this is the job of a lifetime.

While this job is not for everyone, I feel that it affords me a much higher than average level of personal satisfaction. It can vary from monotonous to exhilarating in a single day, usually in only a few minutes. There are few jobs that offer so much opportunity to dirrectly effect peoples lives in a positive way. It does involve many hours away from home, usually for twenty four hours at a time. I believe that most other fire fighters feel as I do about the high level of job satisfaction.

Volunteer for a year or so before trying for a paying position. It takes a particular type of personality to continue doing this work, and you probably won't know if you have it until you've tried it. The hours are irregular and the risk of burnout is high, but it's one of the most exciting jobs available. In addition, you stay in great shape.

My advice for people interested in this career is to start early and test often. Don't get frustrated by your early results they should get better. I would absolutely recommend firefighting as a career choice. It is one of the most rewarding and interesting jobs you can have. I would choose firefighting again if I had to do it over again.
Pros: helping people as your job, time off, pay,
Cons: stressful, some nights you don't get much sleep
People should know that in some places firefighters only work about (8) 24 hour shifts a month! People also should know that a majority of a firefighters work is not fighting fire, it's answering medical alarms.
