I taught a full year of middle school this past school year and it was quite a challenging experience. I have a background in social work and had worked in that field for five years prior to teaching. I taught slow readers who had behavioral problems using a scripted program. There were difficulties on a near daily basis and it often seemed like "pulling teeth" to get the students motivated and on task. However, once I began to see improvements in the students' abilities and established some structure and control, things went more smoothly. By the end of the year, I felt I had learned a great deal and was thrilled that almost all of my students experienced learning gains. I decided to try teaching high school this school year and found too soon that it was not for me. The high school students were also slow readers. Unfortunately, the school did not have a classroom to assign me. So, I "floated" from class to class. My students were moved around. There was no curriculum or plan in place, and materials were scarce. Both I and my students were practically set up for failure. I decided to leave early in the year because I did not feel I could be effective. I would warn prospective teachers to be sure that the school you are interested in teaching at is able to provide you with what you need to effectively do your job (even if it is just an assigned classroom, the required teaching materials, and a skeleton of a plan). Organization is key. I would prefer to have gotten my degree in Education because it would have better prepared me for the teaching experience. This career is so very valuable but you must be in it for the right reasons. You will not get rich but there are limitless rewards when you see that you are making a difference! Above all else, the best advice I can offer is to establish discipline from day one. Consistent structure and discipline are essential. |
