I love this career because I am able to do it from my own home. I would especially recommend it to people with children at home. There are a lot of benefits to being a medical transcriptionist. You are able to work on your own, with somewhat flexible hours and have a lot of varied work. The downfall with this job is that you don't have coworkers nearby to ask questions or just have a little chat. Most transcription companies pay by the line.
Awesome career option. One of the things I am looking forward is good Doctors, Clinics and get exposed to more specialities. Been working for the same doc for the past year. My advise is, this field makes you realise how important your health is and how lucky you are to have inherited good genetics.
I would certainly recommend a career in medical transcription. I absolutely love it. Because I work from home, it has allowed me to be able to stay home with my kids and work a flexible schedule. There are more pros than cons, including that I am available to my children at all times, my commute is short (LOL), and I am doing something that I love. The only con I can think of is that I don't get out and have the social aspect of going to work. Then again, I wouldn't get much done if I was talking at work - I get paid by the line to type! People just assume that medical transcription is just typing. It is not. You must be able to type grammatically correct information that might not always be clearly stated by the dictator. There are a great deal of ESL physicians that I type for, and it can be quite difficult to decipher exactly what they are saying - never mind the medical terminology. To be a medical transcriptionist you must love to type, be disciplined, and have a good background in medical terminology and be grammatically correct. Everyday is different and goes by so fast. I wouldn't trade my job for the world!
