I'm an account executive in a direct mail advertising agency. I've always wanted to work in advertising, so I would do this again. I would recommend this career to anyone who is organized, detail oriented, and can deal with working under deadlines, and with demands that don't always make sense. Clients need the help advertising agencies provide, and advertising agencies in turn are there to advise on, and then produce ad products.
Tips: be sure to have a degree that is at least tangentially related to business, journalism, or advertising/marketing, and have some experience. After that, be willing to start at the bottom. One thing I've found, is that account executives don't live a glamorous lifestyle like the movies would have people believe. They also don't always come up with the creative ideas for the clients. Overall, its a fast paced, decent job that a single person, or a married person with a working partner can survive well on. |
