  I monitor power plant operation remotely -- being a good engineer here is not only about knowing the math behind a process but about understanding how and why the machinery is in place. I would definitely recommend this career path; I'm able to help utilities avoid failure as well as plan for upcoming outages and improve efficiency. If given the choice to start again, I would choose mechanical engineering in school and continue along to this monitoring position. ME is great because, as a student, you're likely to get both hands on experience with machinery and piping as well as background training in fluid and applied mechanics, though it requires hard work and constant attention to detail. Many people assume MEs work strictly in factories or plants, but their work increasingly brings them to consulting roles for software companies looking to solve industrial problems.

  Many people choose to go into engineering because of the salary they expect to receive, but it's important to put more than just salary into consideration when choosing a career.

It was hard for me at first to choose between all the different engineering disciplines. What I enjoy about Mechanical Engineering is the variety. Each day I'm learning something different, whether it be about electrical systems, computer programming, thermodynamics, mechanics, combustion, HVAC systems, fluids, materials, or pretty much anything you can think of. It also offers a lot of flexibility after graduation. Since mechanical engineers deal with things that move they can be found in almost any industry, in totally unexpected situations. If I had to do it over again, I'd still pick mechanical engineering, but I'd probably take some electrical engineering courses as well.

  Hard study, hard work, though jobs rather easy to find. Study as much math as you can - it helps with better jobs. Learn business administration - it may help if you start your own business. Get familiar with computer as much as possible. Do not forget about foreign languages. These may help with your work, eventually can boost your career abroad or in other fields.

  Should be good at maths.
Yes i would recommend it.
Pros- bright future, Cons- not an easy course.
If you think you are not good at maths, then dont go for this course.

  Mechanical Engineering covers a very broad spectrum of jobs. The scale of work involved can range from cars to nano technology, and can be used for environmental purposes or military purposes. This career is very rewarding, because most of the work involves projects, whose completion brings satisfaction. I thoroughly enjoy mechanical engineering.

  Mechanical engineering is a subset of general engineering. Engineers use science and mathematical principles to solve technical problems. Since they often create new products to solve these problems, they are in high demand.
Engineers are essentially inventors. By dreaming up ideas and turning them into a reality they push technology to its limits. Therefore, there is a great deal of prestige to be gained by becoming an engineer.

Mechanical engineers are specialized engineers who work with mechanical devices. These may include elevators, refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, robots, electric generators. Mechanical engineers design tools used in other engineering disciplines.

As you can imagine, mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering specialities.

Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it. 4. Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance. 5. Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. 6. Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. 7. Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. 8. Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one. 9. Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job. 10. Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly. 11. Actively looking for ways to help people.

  Mechanical engineering is such a broad career path that it is difficult to generalize. I earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering. When I left school I immediately found good employment as a project mechanical engineer at a large consumer products manufacturer. In a half year I was transferred to a mechanical asset engineer position. I've been out of school now for a year and a half and have worked on varied and interesting projects the whole time. At almost any time I have the option of staying in mill engineering or pursuing related fields like operations management and project engineering. A newcomer should be aware that many US industries that employ engineers are experiencing hard times due to international competition. The auto industry cutbacks are perhaps the greatest contemporary example. However, excellent opportunities continue to exist in many other industries for people with a solid background in math and science and a mechanical inclination.

  Engineering is a technically rewarding field. It is also a high pressure field, which when compared to other fields such as Medicine, Business, or Law does not measure up in terms of monetary compensation. Unless you absolutely love the field of engineering, I would recommend choosing a more lucrative occupation given that most people in the field of engineering has the capacity to make through Law school or Med school.

  The challenges faced in mechanical engineering keep the job from getting stale. It is very rewarding to see your ideas turned into an effective solution to a problem or product need. You do need to have a solid understanding of manufacturing processes and the capabilities of components, materials, design software, etc. in order to maximize your efficiency. It does take a considerable amount of effort to ensure you are current with new technologies.

  I would recommend this career without hesitation. Even though the school required can get difficult at times and you wonder why you're doing it, I'm glad I did. The wide range of business you can be involved with is amazing. You can work in almost any industry on a lot of different levels. Your not limited to one type of job in this career. You end up doing a lot of different things in your job. I never quite know what my day is going to be like. I never know what is going to happen that will require my expertise. I definitely have job security

  Pretty good overall- I get frustrated at the high differences in pay this position gets depending on the size of the company you work for. I would choose this career path again.

  Good money
Need to be good at math and science to get a degree.
Lots of opportunities around the country to get a job.

More outsourcing by US companies sending these types of jobs overseas.

  I very much like this career because whenever my car has problems, I can fix it most of the time instead of paying money for someone else to. It is a lot of tough work, but it pays off. I recomend that people that are interested in fixing things should become a mechanical engineer.
