Biostatistician
This career can be very demanding but the rewards are worth it. Although this career in some areas, may be bogged down by administrative constraints the pace is speeding up due to improving technologies. With the proper analytic tools this career offers the ability to see the realized impact of a job will done.
I would recommend this career to any inquisitive mind that wants an analytical career with visible results. If I could do it again I would do the normal course of study and also try to add more economic theory along with more exposure to 4th generation computer languages.
Day to day life is project oriented and customer driven. Organizational and communication skills are imperative for the team oriented work style.
With discoveries around every corner--welcome or not--this career CAN be exciting and rewarding.
Words of wisdom.
Be mindful of the dollars and don't distance yourself from them. Although the true aim of this career truly is Quality improvement it will rarely be actionable unless it quantifies cost savings.
People who want to work in quant finance should have a strong programming and stats background. Quant finance is a fast paced and stressful environment filled with brilliant mind. Very challenging but rewarding financially. Most people earn great year end bonuses.
I have only one piece of advice for people trying to get into this and it is. Make double dam sure you want it because its alot of work and if I had to do over I would make sure I would have done better in school. But some of the pros to this career choice is if you dont like working for your boss and feel your under paid well you could always go to work for your self. The con to this if your not careful about it you may have to change careers. What people might not know about this career is always look for a chance to moon light for more money.
