I work for public health and go to daycare centers to see if they are correctly administrating the food program. I have to travel several days a week. This would be a good job if not for the bosses. They try to micro manage everthing. I am trying to get back to being a socialworker.

I am a research scientist (analytical chemist) with a small, start up firm. If I had it to do over again, I would choose an engineering discipline as I believe engineers are better prepared with relevant work skills more immediately out of school (i.e., more math, computer programming, and system modeling training).
Nevertheless, I would recommend my field. The people in it are typically laid back and genuinely good people to be around. The work is rewarding in the sense that many of the products I work on hold the potential to help people, and it is intellectually stimulating.
As a career path, I would recommend internships during school and probably to begin a career with a large firm that will take the time to properly train. Only after having a solid base of training would I recommend a small start-up life science venture as a place to go.

I thought my job would be great several years ago, but it turns out to be OK. I'm not sure I would choose this one if I could do over again. The pros: you might have quite flexible working schedule, more vacation when school is closed. Cons: payment is low, and competition is high, where too many smart people competing less positions. You might think that doing research is away from social life, but actually it is the same thing, for both bright and dark sides.
