I love being a librarian. I wish I had found this career sooner. There are so many different sub-categories within library science that I never really thought about until I was studying it.
Did you know that most librarians have a Master's degree? And many librarians have two Master's degrees - one in the subject they specialize in like Business or Education and the other in Library Science.
Librarians work in schools, universities, public libraries, medical libraries, law libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, law firms, movie production companies, music companies, and more. Think of every city you have ever visited - chances are they had at least one library, probably several.
A great place to learn about librarianship is the American Library Association website: ala.org |

I enjoy my career immensely. It gives me the opportunity to interact with the two things I like best, interacting with people and books. My advice to people considering this career is to have a positive attitude toward people. If I had to do it again, I would definitely choose this career as well as my career as a teacher. There are a few cons such as spending a lot of "outside work time" doing extra little things to keep the library running smoothly, and sometimes, doing things not directly associated with being a librarian, but the pros of sharing knowledges, working with individuals who want to learn, being surrounded by knowledge, far outweigh any cons. I think, what most people do not know about being a librarian, especially in a school, is that you have an opportunity to work with people one at a time or in small groups and to help them increase their knowledge and skills. |

The best things about being a Librarian are that there are several different aspects of it that you specialize in. Usually the work week is not that long; most Librarian positions are part-time, and full-time is anywhere from 32 hours per week on up to about 37. You learn alot of interesting facts, by researching questions that people ask, and helping people find information they need. In that way, it is a stimulating job.
The worst things nowdays are the great numbers of homeless people and crazies who go to the library because it is a warm, safe place to be, and because there is a "social" aspect to being there. It is difficult being responsible for making them leave when the library closes. It is difficult dealing with the dirty old men who insist on using public computers to look at porn and masturbate in public. It is difficult dealing with hellish children whose parents "dump them off", thinking the library is a "safe" place, when the truth is, it is no safer than the local shopping mall. It is difficult dealing with irresponsible people who run their library fines up high, and then try to manipulate the system by getting another library account.
At times, the job can be very boring, like when the library is slow. There is sometimes not much to do besides sit there.
If you consider this career, realize that you might have to move away in order to get a good job. Openings for "newbies" are rare and few. In spite of what the Librarian job descriptions say, a degree is not all that is necessary to get the job. Most Libraries want "experienced" Librarians only. So, how do you get experience? Start early, start at the bottom, as a page (a shelver). Learn that job, then move up into customer services, such as circulation. Also, find a mentor, a Librarian who likes you. Libraries do not tend to recognize nor promote based on talent. There is alot of phony intellectualism, and alot of job openings are filled by "friends". Social contacts are important! Join some professional organizations and network. Get to know some of the trustees on the board of the library where you want to work. It might help you to land that job. |

I worked as a part-time librarian at the circ. desk for 19 years. Until recently, it was a fulfilling and mostly honorable job. It allowed me to be around books, which are my great love, and to help others discover books. I also enjoyed helping people, knowing I made some tiny difference in their lives with my friendliness and knowledge. But now I feel the job has more cons than pros, due to what public libraries are becoming. At least in some areas, the people who run libraries now want them to be more like retail, and have brought in large amounts of feature film DVDs for people to check out. I love movies, but the way patrons began to act once "free" movies were part of the equation, well, it wasn't a pretty sight. So now public libraries are much more confrontational places, as patrons are demanding and rude, with the workers not allowed to correct their behavior, as we would have in prior times. I am not old, by any means, and do not enjoy correcting people; but that's always been a part of a librarian's job, and one I accepted, as did the public. If one has no problem with working in a retail or fast-food "atmosphere," then being a librarian should be no problem. But if you expect the job to be what it once was, you'll be disappointed. I chose this career because of my love of learning, and because other circumstances kept me from attaining the career I'd originally sought (medicine). I am lucky enough to not have to work now, so I retired from the library at an early age. Still, even knowing what public libraries are like now, I would recommend the job, especially as a "starter job," for a young adult. The pay is better than in retail and fast-food, at least in the beginning, and the pace is not as hectic, though that can depend on what kind of branch you work in. If I had it to do again, yes, I'd work as a librarian, if my 1st choice of career was unavailable to me again. I look back mostly in fondness and appreciation at my years on the job, and feel I gave much of myself in service to the public. |

Librarianship is a great career choice for those with a curious mind and a desire to find the right answer. Like teaching, a librarian does his or her job out of love for the work, not for the glamour or the money.
There are many fields within librarianship to explore. There are law librarians, health science librarians, academic librarians, public librarians, school librarians, music librarians, art librarians; the list goes on and on.
Pros: helping people, intellectually stimulating
Cons: pay varies depending on who you work for, some public or academic libraries will want you to work evenings or weekends at a reference desk
Given the choice to start over with my career, I would still go back to being a librarian. I truly enjoy what I do. |
