Becoming a legal assistant/legal secretary in Florida does not require any special schooling. I have worked as a legal assistant for six years primarily in the field of workers’ compensation. Law firms in Florida are a dime a dozen, and the rate of pay is generally better than other administrative fields. In my particular field, I maintain the attorney’s schedule, use a dictation machine, do simple form letters to clients, Judges, mediators, attorney’s etc. The up side to this field is that you can really start out in a law office in the most entry level position and work your way up without receiving professional training, and another pro is that generally when Christmas comes you are usually awarded with a Christmas bonus. The cons are that you may end up working for an attorney who has a type A personality, is a real jerk and doesn’t care about his/her employees. Overall it provides a good income and stable employment. |

Interesting Fact |
In the 18th and 19th century, hatmakers used poisionous chemicals including mercury in their work. As result, many developed pathological symptons -- an estimated 10% went insane. Hence the term "mad as a hatter" and Lewis Carroll's character, the Mad Hatter. |
