Being an attorney requires law school subsequent to a college degree. Therefore I would recommend given the cost of undergraduate school that a student choose a reasonably priced school. The cost of law school will greatly increase the debt load on graduation. In addition, obviously most students do not work at the same time thereby delaying their entrance in the work place and temporarily not having an income. After graduation students have multiple opportunities to use the degree. They can choose private practice in a law firm, an in house general counsel at a corporation, a govermental agency attorney or a non attorney job related to legal or non legal sectors. In the current economy having a job as an attorney provides a generally stable employment with earnings that even at the lower levels generally provides a sufficient amount to support a person or family. Some attorneys also go into public service which may or may not provide a large salary but will provide satisfaction for assisting people.

Be aware of the huge time commitment and change in lifestyle if you go into a law firm. While the salary may be good (and attractive), the time pressure may wear you down.

I switched into law mid-career, after several years in the commercial world buying and selling hard products. Attending my first law lecture was like coming home. The world began to make sense and, as a lover of words, law - with its tight focus on words and their meanings - was definitely the career for me.

Having said that, it's a far from an easy ride. In the end you've got to deliver, you can't sit around and be creative all day, you've got to get things done to a deadline. That can be stressful. But all told, it's a great profession to be in - plenty of knotty problems to solve, appreciative clients when you get it right. Think about it - but do something else first to give yourself some depth and experience.

I work in public policy and am involved in lobbying for the passage of a law to provide incentives for small and medium-sized enterprises. It has been a very rewarding career, since I know that the passage of this law would benefit many small businesses. It has been difficult in that I have to ensure that the interests of my stakeholders are protected against the competing interests of other players, but this challenge is what makes my job meaningful. People should know that this job requires a lot of research and good communication skills, and a lot of tact particularly in the face of opposition.

A lot of people go to law school after college because they simply don't know what else to do and have incorrect notions of what lawyers do. It's not the high drama portrayed on TV. Most attorneys I know are quite unhappy with their jobs and are only doing it because they enjoy the money and are trying to figure out what else they might possibly go into. Several of my law school colleagues have gotten out of law altogether, within a few years of graduating from law school. The hours are long and the work can be quite stressful. Most of the time you are just on the computer all day long, writing, researching, emailing, or reviewing documents. I would choose this career again, but would do more research into alternatives to the traditional practice of law.

If I had to do it over again, I probably would have chosen a different career path. I've been a litigator for the past 10 years. The job is challenging and very stressful. Even more so, the constant bickering with defense attorneys really wears on me. I often "dream" about leaving the law and finding a stress-free occupation, if such a thing exists. On the other hand, I've seen first-hand the good that my profession can do for those who can't otherwise afford representation. This is what makes it possible for me to get out of bed in the morning. Overall, I'm ok being a lawyer, but I wish I'd chosen a different career path!

For all those aspiring to be a lawyer, sound knowledge of laws is compulsory. I recommend this career because this gives a chance to serve those who are waiting for justice. Besides, it also gives you name, fame and off course money too.
If I get a chance to choose my career again surely I will choose lawyering.
Being a lawyer, sometimes you may feel that you are in a fine profession that brings you whatever you wish to. But at the same time it also brings responsibilities and tensions. Sometimes you have to listen to your heart and sometimes to your mind. Sometimes you face a dilemma that is very difficult to move out from.
One should know that this is not a career where you will start making money overnight. It takes a few to some years to be established as a successful lawyer. So be prepared to face some financial crunch at the initial stages of lawyering.

I would not recommend a career as an attorney to anyone who is looking to have any sort of life outside of work, including a family. I regret the money I invested in law school as I am no longer practicing as an attorney. Consider working as a paralegal for a year or two before investing in law school to be sure you really want to do this career.

I really enjoy being a lawyer, it is a highly rewarding career. The pay is excellent and contrary to what many think the hours are wonderful. I always have enjoyed the law and being a lawyer makes this passion into a career. I work on environmental law, so this is a chance to make a positive difference and work on what I believe to be important.

So far, it has been very hard to find a job. If you are planning on becoming a lawyer, plan to be poor for a long time because tuition is not cheap...unless you are lucky and have a full-ride scholarship or are willing to work insane hours for a law firm.

It is neither cheap nor easy to become a lawyer. In general, however, the career is rewarding. One should expect long hours and excessive research. Lawyers spend much more time in front of the computer or in the library than they do in front of the judge.

I am an attorney, but I am unable to find a fulfilling and well paying job in my field. I completed four years of college and three years of law school. I passed the bar on my first attempt. My job search has been difficult and discouraging. I was "employed" at a small law firm and I gained a lot of experience in my field. I represented clients, attended court hearings, completed countless items of paperwork, but received very little pay. My advice for anyone considering becoming an attorney is to make sure that it is really the career you want. It is a big commitment and the market is difficult. It is very important to work as an intern at law firms as a student. That experience is key in finding employment later on. It is very important to figure out what type of law interests you and really try to aim for that. There are many stereotypes about lawyers and probably many of them are true. I would recommend this career to someone who really knows that they want to be an advocate and wants to push themselves.

I am a criminal defense attorney, and although I find my job challenging, rewarding, and intellectually stimulating, there are some negative aspects of my career that make it less than perfect. Firstly, the hours that one has to work are grueling if you want to keep this high paying job: I work until 11 pm most nights, and at least half a weekend on average. Second, generally, when you work for partners in a law firm that get rich when you work hard, and lose money when you are not billing, there is no incentive for them to promote a healthy work-life balance. This hits women more than men in the profession: more than half of female attorneys leave law firms after 5 years of practice. In addition, my career will only progress as a criminal defense attorney if I leave the law firm to get some prosecutorial experience, which means planning for a pay cut after accumulating hundreds of thousands of dollars in law school loans. However, if I don't do this, I may never be able to bring business into my law firm and make partner. One must remember that unless you go into government work or work in-house, you will have to be a salesperson and bring in business in order to be successful.

Law is my so-called "second career." I had been a college instructor, but decided to attend law school at Saint Louis University upon completion of my Ph.D. I am now a founding and managing partner of a three attorney general practice firm in Rockford, Illinois. I get to help people get divorced, go bankrupt, or avoid jail. I sometimes feel like a vulture that is there to make money from other people's misery. But, I do try to do a good job as I guide them through the legal system. It is a job where I do feel like I am able to help people. If I had to do it all over again, I would have been a medical doctor, but as a second career, this one is pretty good. Having people skills is ver important, as well as the ability to think on one's feet. I had once been afraid of the court room, but once exposed to it, I now love it. I do not use much of what was learned in law school, however. It is much more important to clerk and get get practical experience while in law school. Very important to keep your word and gain a reputation for yourself. Beginning One last point: despite popular opinion, this is not a job field that makes one rich. While some lawyers make a good start right out of school, for the most part, new lawyers will work hard and not make a lot of money for years.
