I am a Family Nurse Practitioner. If I had found full time employment I would not be writing this article. I decided to become an Advanced Practice Nurse when my second son was delivered by a Midwife. I wanted to teach and help people. That decision was the best one I have ever made. Nursing pays well and it is easy to find a job as a registered nurse, but not so easy once you have your advanced degree.
My advice is to get at least 2 years hospital based experience as a registered nurse BEFORE starting graduate school. Emergency Department experience is great for Adult and Family NP’s. Acute Care NP’s need to work in either MICU or SICU type unit. Geriatric NP’s will learn what they need on a Med/Surg unit or Rehab hospital. I should think Labor and Delivery for a future Midwife but my school didn’t train them.
Since I went about my career backwards, raising my family instead of working in the hospital, I have had difficulty getting a full time position using my graduate degree. Some Hospitals are reluctant to employ a NP as a staff nurse, because they are worried you will boss everyone around and then leave. The VA was very good to me and paid me extra for my Master’s Degree to work as a Med/Surg nurse and I put my two years in there and got my first full time job as a FNP.
Unfortunately, as is very common, I was laid off and a physician was hired and I am looking for a full time position again. My prospects are much better now that I have 2 years hospital experience, 1 year minus 1 day as an FNP and 2+ years very part time work as an FNP. Wish me luck on my interview Tuesday, and if I don’t get the NP job, I hope I will find work in an Emergency Department (and take my own advice).

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) / Home Health Aide: This is a wonderful position and field for CNA's who do not want to work in traditional CNA positions in hospitals, nursing homes or medical clinics. The Home Health Aide is a member of an interdisciplinary team delivering restorative or rehabilitative services to individuals in their own homes. The Home Health Aide is typically responsible for assisting an individual with personal care during their treatment period, which can consist of bathing, hair care, nail care, changing linens, laundry, and other chores during each visit. Visits and tasks are ordered by a physician and carried out under the direction of the nursing staff of the home health agency. Home Health Aides are usually paid at a slightly lower rate than the standard for a CNA, but are paid a travel expense for their mileage to and from patients' homes. The travel benefit is usually at the federal rate of reimbursement or higher if subsidized by the agency. If the agency is connected to a regional facility or hospital, employee benefits are ususally excellent. Other benefits include: full time and part-time opportunities, flexible scheduling, overtime when patient census is high, and less physical demands than traditional CNA positions. The Home Health Aide position is an excellent alternative for those who truly enjoy indivudal patient care delivered in the patient's home. |
