I am a histopathologist, and think it is one of the best professions. If you are interested in finding the cause of a disease, and predicting the course of the disease, then pathology is certainly the career for you.
Histopathology means looking at a tissue piece under a microscope to find out the disease. It is considered the gold standard for diagnosing diseases. Histopathologists also are a part of the audit team of an hospital, and they are considered to be the final word, as far as diagnosing a disease condition goes.
The downside of this career is that inspite of being a physician, you are not recognized as such by non-medical people. Also, if you feel queasy at the sight of blood or raw human tissue, this is certainly not the profession for you. However, if you want to be the final diagnostic authority, histopathology is certainly a viable option. In fact, pathologists are looked upto by their clinical colleagues as being intellectually superior. So, if you are interested, try getting admission to a medical school, get through the gruelling routine, and take surgical pathology residency after finishing your MD or MBBS. And then feel the satisfaction of being THE FINAL WORD in medical practice.

Interesting Fact |
In the 18th and 19th century, hatmakers used poisionous chemicals including mercury in their work. As result, many developed pathological symptons -- an estimated 10% went insane. Hence the term "mad as a hatter" and Lewis Carroll's character, the Mad Hatter. |
