First and foremost, depending on which state you apply in, you are a State Peace Officer, which in states such as Michigan you have jurisdiction throughout the state to enforce all laws. So graduating from an accredited police academy is the first step which must be taken. For most of my constituents the old saying of "...a game warden is what every young sportsman wants to be and what every old one wish he had been." holds very true. Most game wardens work out of their home, and are assigned a patrol vehicle, Off road vehicle, boat, snowmobile, and any other apparatus that can contribute to thier patrol efforts. Generally, you enforce the laws that pertain to natural resource protection and recreational safety, but in certain situations you may be the only law enfrocement officer for miles, which may mean responding to things like, flee and elude, domestic violence, DUI's, and other "non resource" related crimes. You will be expected to work most weekends as this is when most people are out recreating. But the benifits, ie...medical, dental, retirement.. are above par in that your employer is usaully the state. Any person deciding to pursue this career should have strong people skills, remember, most people I speak to are armed with a weapon. So your ability to remain calm in heated situations is a must. Your vocabulary and writting, typing, etc..skills should be above average, as you will have to submit reports to prosecuting attorneys. And finally as with any law enforcement agency, honesty and integrity are paramount. Remember a full background investigation will be conducted prior to hiring, so honesty is the best policy when applying with any L.E. agency. |
