My career came about more by nessecity than planning. After graduating college with an Art History degree, I was unemployed for almost a year. This job opened an engineering consulting company, and I knew someone who asked for me speficially to work there.
At first I didn't mind the work, especailly after being unemployed. I started out organizing years of files that had just been put in boxes, sorted them, entered each document into a database, and then archived them. As time progressed, I also atarted routing documents that came into the office, also enetering each document in a database, and then sending them back out when corrections had been made. Later I also started coordinating meeting for the engineers, which included callign caterers, booking conference rooms, and setting up the food, as well as clean up.
The days aren't too bad when I have quite a few things to do, but it is work that doesn't take much intesive thought, and can become very boring. When work is slow in the office, it becomes a paid form of torutre for me. Even though I do enjoy organizing things in gerneal, after two years of filing and serving lunches, I am ready to move on, and go back to school to get a degree that is a bit more marketable than art history.
I don't regret accepting the job, as this company has very flexible hours, pays very well considering the level of work I do, and was much better than being unemployed. It is good fer an entry level job if you don't have another course of study to fall back on. But if you tend to get bored easily, and need more intellecual stimulation to be content, I would not suggest it. |

my advice for anyone thinking of going into office management is to, honestly, start at the bottom. get a job as a receptionist, file clerk or other position with small responsibility issues; then, keep your eyes open. take a look at all the facets of what makes an office/business actually "run". you may find that you're really not interested in filling out forms or typing or dealing with the personality conflicts and management styles. i would recommend this career to anyone who is detail orientated, can multi-task and prioritize and enjoys a challenge every day. today, tomorrow or in 20 years, i would still be an office manager. i have been with my current firm for 18 years and oversee every aspect, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, human resources...etc. i enjoy the diversity and the dolldrums. if i'm not in the "mood" to do something challenging, there is always something else that needs to be done. the pros and cons? you must be able to make a decision based on knowledge or policy and have the turpitude to stand by it, sometimes you may not be the most "liked" person in the office, hiring and firing is especially hard when someone is qualified but does not fit with your organization. most of the time the salaries, benefits and fringe benefits are better with an environment suitable to most anyone's taste. what might you never have heard about? the pleasure you can take from a well deserved "great job!" or in knowing that your opinion/work matters and counts! |
