This is NOT for the weak of heart!!! I would recommend this career, but only for those that are meant for it. Yes, I would again choose this career. I enjoy what I do and have fun.
Pros are the variety. No day is dull. No day is ever the same. There are specific rules (policies) to abide by, but free thinking is permitted as well. Staff is a big family. Sometimes a good thing, sometimes not.
Cons are, well, the cons. :) It is a thankless job. Rarely does anyone say, "Thanks for enforcing the rules. Thanks for making me do what is right." Offenders can be VERY manipulative and a lot of staff get caught up and end up losing their jobs, families, etc. It is a very stressful job/career.
I supervise a housing unit with both custody (officers) and treatment staff. That is quite difficult because neither seems to see or understand the other's point of view. Additionally, there are three shifts of custody which I must maintain some sort of contact and supervision with requiring different work hours and management styles. I must adapt constantly to dealing with different staff.
