This is an excellent starting career for someone who might not know exactly what they want to do when they grow up. As an administrative assistant, I have been given a wide array of projects, jobs, and tasks to perform -- from standard secretary work (answering the phone, emails, mail, etc) to designing marketing materials (brochures, advertisements, etc).
Keep in mind, that it helps to choose this job in a field you're interested in. There are administrative jobs in many fields, such as medical, legal, small business, large corporations, etc. Many of the skills utilized in the job (typing, customer service, co-worker relations, etc) can transfer from field to field.
Though the administrative staff can sometimes be looked down upon and abused by their higher-up counterparts, an office's efficiency is dependent upon a competent administrative staff. |

I have a double major in English/Spanish, so some would say that I am overqualified to be an Admin Assistant, but I love it! I get to do different things everyday and still not be at a high-stress, high-responsibility job. I get to write (letters, ect.) and also design publications like brochures, etc. No day is the same, and I enjoy all of the multi-tasking. My advice for people considering this career is get your skills together and put them on your resume... and work hard on your resume so that it stands out. Include especially ANY computer hardware/software skills you have, because it matters more and more every day. LEARN MS OFFICE (word, excel, access and powerpoint). People will want to keep you around if you have computer skills. Many temp agencies will let you train and get certified for free (that I how I learned PowerPoint and got certified in MS Word and Excel).
It can get frustrating because there aren't a lot of big decisions you make for the office. Just appreciate it.... when i leave work, i'm very rarely still thinking about it! |
