I wish I had done this earlier in life. This is, honestly, the best job ever. All day long I get to wait for people who need help to call 9-1-1, then I get to go help them. How cool is that?
Well ... it's James Dean multiplied by Clint Eastwood to the infinity power cool. It's also long hours (I work 24-hour shifts) and demanding work. It's a somewhat technical field which requires a fair amount of schoolwork before you can get hired. You must be able to set aside your emotions long enough to help people even when they are combative, young, or in a dangerous situation. This is not to say that you need to be emotionless--people who cannot feel are useless in this job--but that you need to be able to set those emotions aside for the time it takes to help someone. Feel them afterward, and talk with your fellow EMS workers about them, but feel them. It can be a really tough job to do; there are physical requirements (you do have to lift patients and equipment!).
All things said and done, I love this job and recommend it to anyone who thinks they want to be a Doctor, Nurse, or other allied Healthcare Professional. The class training will give you a leg up on your classmates, the field work will open your eyes to medicine. Even if you don't plan to go into Emergency Medicine, it's a great way to learn the trade. |

If you consider this as a career you definately don't want to be scared of blood and guts, or have a weak stomach. I would recommend this career to anyone who wants to help people and likes being able to be a leader as well as have the ability to think on their feet. I would definately choose this career again, it is different everyday and you are able to deal with many situations people can't even dream of. The pros of this are helping people, saving lives, it is always different, and you get to drive an ambulance. The cons are the blood and guts, some really nasty smells, people who are drunk and beligerent, and some dangerous neighborhoods. People different have to be aware that there is some danger from the patient as well as their friends and family. Occassionally, depending on where you work, you will have to go into a dangerous part of the neighborhood. You also have to be aware of you will be exposed or presented with all different types of people and medical conditions and you have to be flexisible enough to handle each one. I recommend this to anyone who wants to become a doctor or anyone thinking of studying a health science. |
