Becoming an elementary school teacher is great! I would recommend this career to people who enjoy something new everyday. It is also a great career for someone who is very flexible, creative, and very patient! Becoming a school teacher has great perks. You have a three month break and also get a break in the winter and the spring. You do definitely work for them though! You work more hours than required by your contract just to stay ahead and prepared. The kids are what makes this job fun! The administration and parents can be wonderful or your worst nightmare! As a young teacher, I have to work even harder to prove my competence and skills. Overall, this is a very rewarding and fulfilling job. If I had to do it over again, I would choose teaching again.
This career is very demanding and often receives very little support. Of course there are many benefits from the children but be prepared to deal with or attempt multiple times to deal with parents. Also, depending on your area, subbing may be your first line of employment. It is very difficult financially. As a job, it's very interesting since you get different students all the time and get a real feel for what schools you'd prefer to send your own children to, but the pay is not steady nor is the work.
