I work as an Electronics Engineer in the U.S. Federal Government (Department of Defense). My area of specialization is logistics engineering. I've had a good career. I've accomplished good things working with hardware/software systems that have made a positive impact for the soldier in the field. I've traveled all over the world, I've worked with really good people, and I'll have a generous retirement package when I leave. However, I would not recommend this career to young people. Contractors do most of the real engineering work on our military systems so a Government employee really isn't going to do much "hands-on" engineering. It's mostly program management and paperwork. There are some exceptions with newer programs but, by and large, contractors do most of the technical work. Also, new employees are going to be placed in the "new" retirement system (FERS) which is much less generous than the "old" retirement system (CSRS). If a young Engineer is determined to work in the Federal Government, it would probably be best to shoot for some of the more "elite" agencies such as NASA or DARPA. These agencies work on some pretty exciting programs. I've had a good career but, if I had to do it all over again, I would probably try to work in the private sector. |
