I'm very happy with my career choice. It is a good choice for those with a quantitative bent, but who prefer a grounding in the real world over abstract mathematics. One thing that folks entering the profession don't always realize is the heavy quantitative element in Ph.D. programs in economics. The graduate curriculum is very different from the undergrad curriculum in this respect. Pros of this career are a great deal of intellectual stimulation and that you get to work with smart people. I don't really see many cons, but people who consider themselves "people persons" might want to look for a career that involves less solitary contemplation.
