"It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it."
Dishwashing has been my career for the past 19 years, and people ask me questions about my perseverance all the time: "How can you stand such monotonous work? Don't you ever get bored?"
The answer, quite briefly, is "No, not ever."
The secret of my longevity in this line of work is finding a comfortable rhythm and routine. When that happens, dish washing becomes second-nature; no thought required. When a person reaches that stage, the mind is free to wander and dream, the ears are (barring other immediate obligations) free to listen to music or language tapes, the mouth free to practice! Were it not for my choice of career, I probably would not have found the time to learn Italian.
Standing for long lengths of time was difficult when I first started, so I bought a comfortable barstool (with the owner's permission) which helped tremendously.
I would recommend this career to the person who values their inner space, and likes solitude, generally. You don't need to have good people skills to wash dishes well, so people with social anxiety tolerate it quite well. The pay is not great, but the work is not difficult--it all evens out in the end. |
