I am a periodontist and I am extremely happy with my career path. A periodontist is a dental specialist that treats periodontal disease as well as places dental implants.
As a dentist I have the priviledge of working in a health care field providing quality care to patients. As a periodontist I can practice the surgical aspect of dentistry. Periodontists also have the ability to develop long term relationships with patients which is not common in other dental specialties.
To become a periodontist one must first successfully complete dental training. My suggestion would be first to apply for dental school and also to spend as much time as possible with dental practitioners in your area. Specialty training for a periodontist is an additional 3 years after dental school training. It is a competitive field so be prepared to do well in dental school.
I would highly recommend this field to any one who is interested in dentistry especially the surgical aspect.
