I am a product demonstrator and I do not regret it. I enjoy the contact with the people and in my case, exposure to their pets (as I do pet food and product demos). I love working around the animals in a pet store environment. The work is basically flexible in that one can choose the hours they are working and an event is only four hours long. The pay is excellent, usually running between twelve and fourteen dollars an hour.
The only real con is this means four hours standing. Demonstrators generally are not allowed to be sitting down. That can be eased by walking around the store and interacting with customers...however if one has trouble with his or her feet, or cannot stand for long periods this is not a good choice. The work is usually, however light and pleasant and with the right company, rewarding. The other con is that these jobs are not generally ongoing unless one gets employment directly with a manufacturer in which case they do have regular work. Assignment jobs, however offer flexibility and if one works for more than one company, the jobs can add up to full time.
Product knowlege is very important in this field as folks will often ask questions and expect you to have answers. Too, even if you are not a store employee, it is greatly appreciated if you do help customers or guide them to someone that is able to help them. Having a good knowlege base on animals, asking questions about their pets and making positive contact with both the pet and the owner really goes a long way. If you love animals and working with the public, this is a great job to consider. I have gotten this work by signing up with the National Association of Retail Merchandisers....NARMs. They run a website and the entire site, save for the qualifications tests (not mandatory to get work) is free. This is great work for those who wish to maintain a more flexible schedule. |
