To survive as a dancer, both physically and mentally, you must take many preparations. The first recommendation is to begin training at a very young age so that your muscles will be strong and flexible. Dancing professionally is an extremely rewarding career, however, there are many downsides including injuries, pain, 100% dedication, short career-span and low pay. The joy of performing can sometimes overcome these downsides and can make work seem like you are always having fun. If I were injury-free I would certainly chose this career!
