My advice to those that are interested in a career in the customer service field is that you must be a person of patience. Most times you will come across many people who are busy and want things done now and along with that comes the impatience. As a customer service rep you must be kind, patient as well an open minded and a great listener. It is by far not an easy position at all to hold and can be a great deal of stress depending on your own mindset when coming to work. I would honestly say if you are the type of person who can leave your outside troubles at the door this is the position for you. I recommend it to anyone with a kind heart and a good understanding of other human beings. If you enjoy helping others and getting the job done this is the position for you. If I had to pick careers again I would say I would definitely be a customer service rep. Nowadays there are so many areas meaning that you can work via internet customers whether in a technical aspect or as a member service rep via live chat or thru email, depending on the company. Customer Service isn't always phones. It can be merely chat or email as well. The pro's of the Customer Service Rep career is that you feel fulfillment for helping others as well as there is a great chance of promotions in this particular position. The cons are the constant turn over rate. You meet many who stay but a lot also who leave as well as it's hard to find high paying customer service positions with everything being outsourced. I believe that many people as stated before only think that Customer Service is phone work I believe many don't realize that many times especially for internet companies there are customer service reps answering email inquires and not automated responses answering via email as well as live chat's are a team of customer service representatives as well.
I am a home-shored customer service representative for a major office supply company. While the best part of my job is the environment - I work from home on my own computer - the drawback is compensation. I love not having to dress and go to the office. I love that Customer Service is about solving problems - all kinds of problems every single day. It's also about taking orders, giving information and pricing. It's a good job which requires me to think about it while I am doing it. I don't have to take it home at night - but I don't get paid much either. In fact, I don't have sick time, or paid vacation time. I have not had a raise in three years - and no matter how well I do my job - I cannot expect one.
Being a customer service representative is a great job for people with a great personality and who enjoys talking with other people. You have to deal with situations that can become stressful, but you have to work around the tough situations and look for a positive resolution. It can become difficlut sometimnes when people have problems. But you have to listen to what they have to say, and give them the best customer satisfaction possible. It's great talking to people everyday. You make new friends, and make people's day if you've helped them. I would recommend any customer service job for anybody looking for a great career with the public!
I am a customer service representative for an inbound call center, which collects on defaulted student loans. I am satisfied in my career, it pays well, I can help people resolve their debts and fix their credit bureau reports, and there is a lot of overtime available.
This is a good career choice if you enjoy helping people. Especially if you pride yourself in going the extra mile to provide exceptional service. This builds credibility and repeat businessfor your company, and also your indivivual credibility and marketability. The only drawback, is that at times you will have to deal with very negative people, who have had an experience that didn't meet their expectations, but a skilled CSR, can reagin customer loyalty.
This is a career for people who enjow talking on the telephone. It can be restrictive at times as far as freedom of movement. I would recommend this to people who are looking for an interim profession and are trying to pay for college or further education. It can also be a flexible schedule for people with children or need to work different hours than the regular 9 to 5. People might not know that there is a lot of training that youhave to go through to be a customer service representative.
If there would be any advice I could give on being a customer service representative it would be to stay cheerful and keep work at work. In my experience of being a customer service rep, I always enjoyed having a number of different responsibilities. I found that in order to get things done you had to make connections with the right people and that was done with gratitude and respect. There will be times when you may feel greatly underappreciated, but do not take it personally. As long as you know that you are doing your job and getting things done and once in awhile you get a thank you, it will be worth it. To enjoy your job you must think of it that way. It is your job, it is not who you are.

If you are planning a career in Customer Service, you should be a very personable person and one who can solve a problem easily and with patience. You should always be able to put the other person's feelings in front of your own. The pros of becoming a customer service representative is that you meet all types of people in all walks of life. The downside of this job is that sometimes it may be difficult to deal with an irate customer and many times your are very, very busy during your day. People should know that it does take a great deal of patience and a large amount of knowledge about the company/product for whom you are working in order to help the customer.
The work is very easy, but very tedious. Some days there is a lot of downtime for reading, crossword puzzles, knitting, or whatever your interesets. Other days, it's non stop. And this job is not for the sensitive, as you will get yelled at a lot for things that have nothing to do with you.
Customer Service Representatives need to be patient and polite with all types of customers. Knowledgeable in the ways to solve their problems or questions about the company you represent. Good computer skills are necessary. Companies will time your work in minutes as to how many calls you take, time on each call, quality of work, quality of forms you submit. Calls are monitored for quality expectations. You must be able to work in a fast paced office environment. This job can be stressful as you are talking on the phone all day long with few breaks. Sitting all day may not be for everyone. The public may not know there is little interaction with co-workers as you are answering telephone calls all day. Supervisors can be overly critical of your work because they themselves are under deadlines and job quality scores. A company who gives you benefits and good pay make this job rewarding if you enjoy helping people.
While this is generally an easy career to get into, it can be very difficult to handle. With my employer, I handle incoming calls from doctors regarding patient claims. Very often, you get doctors who believe they understand insurance better than you do, even though you've had extensive training on it before handling phone calls. When you get one of these calls, almost nothing you tell the doctor matters; you are just someone for them to complain to because the world doesn't work the way they think it should. You need a thick skin to handle many of the complaints and insults you receive. Honestly, there are only two positives with this type of job- sometimes you honestly do get to help people, which is a wonderful feeling, and it also pays decent and usually a bit more than minimum wage.
If you are a people person and can handle criticism without taking it personally, this is a good choice. I love the variety, I love interacting with the customers and most of my co-workers. It's never routine and always interesting. I like going home at the end of the day feeling like I helped someone each day. Your coworkers and management support (or lack thereof) will make or break this career.
When considering customer service, I suggest choosing a work at home opportunity. I have worked in a call center environment and work at home and by far work from is better in my opinion. If you like the gossip and rat race of being told when to take a break, when to eat lunch and when to come to work and when to go home then choose a call center environment. I however do not like being told when to go/leave work, when I am tired or when I am hungry. If I had to do all over again, I would still choose this type of work because I have learned a lot about how mankind is and how I can become a better person.
I am a customer service rep for a government office. I find the job quite enjoyable. The pay is some of the best in the field and the job is easy and fun. I do not have any benefits no sick days or holiday pay or insurance. For people needing those things this is not the job for you.
The customer service career is easy for someone and it might be hard for someone. The tips is about your heart. You must have feeling that you want to do this job. You want to serve people even they're evil to you. You have to hand the problem all the time. Not just about your customers but about your internal customers too. (people that you have to work with) Just like, when you go to buy something or go somewhere that you'll get some service, then if you think that you have to serve them, you'll know about how to make them happy and glad to come back to you again.
