You've got to have a passion for crafts to be successful in this field. My passion has led me to test the limits, and to make my ideas really come to life, despite some people's opionions that "these things cannot be done". I would go into this field again, and likely take a less roundabout way to it, but that's because i didn't even think about this field before stumbling across it by mistake. It gives me great satisfaction to envision a piece of furniture that fulfills the requirments laid down by the costumer, and add some touch to it so that it doesn't look like a generic furniture. But the fun is just begining, because creating that furniture from the raw materials is a fun process. I'm not saying it can't be tedious at times, and there are setbacks you don't always forsee, but the joy of the process overrules those things. It is my belief that keeping that joy in mind when the going gets tough makes it easier to deal with the problems you face. There are always new things to learn, and always pay attention to what others are doing. Don't be afraid to work for others to gain experience, and to learn from them how they work and operate their business, but be sure to see what works, and what doesn't and learn from it. It's a very creative work, though sometimes can be very physical, but the combination of physical work, and working by the computer to create a 3D model for your costumers to better understand your idea is great in my opinion. |

As a artist/designer, I feel completely fulfilled by my work. I work my own hours, I get paid for doing what I love, and make good money at it. What's best is that I have a wonderful way to get out all my creative urges, and get the feedback from the public to inspire me to create more. One of the best aspects is that I can work at home and be with my family when I want.
I didn't start out in art (my degree is in Criminal Justice), but ended up there kind of by "accident". Being self taught, I worked my way up from doing local craft shows to owning my own store where I sold mostly things that I made myself, and now publishing painting books and have recently signed a contract to license my designs.
This kind of work is similar to others where you are self-employed--meaning you are never really done with your work. You can always paint one more thing, or two, or three! There is no end, and no real days off. Self discipline is required, to produce enough items to make a profit. You are responsible for all the business end of the work, also--the taxes, the insurance, the paperwork.
I would recommend this kind of work for sure. It's been a wonderful experience, and has enabled me to be honored at the White House and the Library of Congress. To achieve these types of things, you do need to be motivated, be organized, be creative and willing to take risks, and have a stong drive to succeed.
Being flexible and well rounded in your education will help you succeed in art. Learn all you can about business, in addition to your art training. Internet knowledge is very valuable, and camera skills. The more you know about the world in general, the better! |
