I have worked in the Administrative career field for 21 years now. I have found it rewarding and would say it was a good career field. Offices could not function without the people behind the scenes and the administrative people are behind the scenes, and you need to know that going into it. Your boss will get the praise, but you will get the satisfaction knowing what part of it you did.
I like the career because I know all aspects of what is going on in the company, not just my one little area. I keep the boss informed of when things are getting off track throughout the organization, because I have ties to the lower support staff and the higher leaders and can view the organization as a whole. I feel that is part of my job to keep everyone working together and everything flowing.
My job is to NOT make decisions, and I am happy to not have that type of responsibility. I have input into most everything in the office, it is input as an opinion. Your relationship with your immediate boss is the most important work related relationship you can have in an office.
The down side to this job is it may not pay as much as some other career fields, but it does leave time for the family and the stress level is kept to a minimum and that is the major thing that went into my decision to work in the administrative field.
