If you want to become a systems analyst, the best thing to do is dive into every machine you see, rip it apart, and put it back together. Then, when you get it all back together, break it. Throw it off the roof of your house. Give it a virus. Have your friend who knows nothing about computers play around in the system folder. Have your 3 year old neice play with it for three days. If you like the challenge of solving puzzles, this is a great field to get into. Although in order to get a degree, you need to learn a lot of math. I HATE math, but it was worth it just to get a degree and a career in this field. As for the type of career you can have, it is a nice mixture between working on your own, working with a team, and the option of interacting with lots of people or no one. You can work as an individual consultant, picking and choosing your clients. Or you can work for a large company, with the possiblity of moving up a corporate ladder. The possibilities are endless when you go into the computer field. You can start off as a systems analyst, but you always form new connections with people so that you can have future options of becoming a networking administrator, programmer, web designer, etc.. You will never be stuck in a mundane environment doing the same thing every day if you don't want to. The option to move around will always be there. I rate my job a 10 and would recommend it for anyone. I'd always choose this career, and would do it over and over again if given the opportunity. With the above mentioned pros, there are still some cons that come with this type of career. To get the degree, you need to do a lot of difficult math. And without a degree, you are a weak competitor. The field is extremely competitive these days. There are a lot of jobs, but there are many more applicants today than there were years ago. It can be frustrating (hence the cute little pictures and videos of people smashing their computer) - that will be YOU on almost a daily basis. However, the rewards greatly outnumber the inconveniences of it. IF you like that sort of thing :) One thing people may not have heard about is the fierce competition in the field, and the instability of it. There are thousands of very qualified tech support individuals out there with no jobs because the market has become congested with applicants who are all one notch above the other. Getting lucky, improving your resume, and knowing the right people all help in landing the job you desire. A friendly personality is a plus also. In spite of the competition, and the level of frustration that it produces, this is a great job for someone who loves to keep thier mind stimulated and who loves a challenge. |

Advice for people considering becoming a Computer Systems Analyst are to study the current software platforms, applications and hardware and practice the various physical tasks associated with the field often. Keep up to date with certifications, training and the newest software/hardware that's being released. Yes, I would recommend this career since it involves both logical processes, hands-on physical work and people skills. It generally pays well, which is always a great thing! Yes, I would still go into this career but would expect to have a harder time making the salary I desire, as outsourcing has become rampant and companies are scaling down their technical staffs. The pros are given as my reasons for recommending this career, and the cons are the frequent outsourcing, stress of being constantly at risk for laying off, and end-users taking their computer-related frustration out on you when their systems are having problems. People going into this field may not know that companies are often outsourcing their I.T. staff to other companies, who often then turn around and outsource you again, therefore you end up working for a company you didn't chose and who you may know nothing about. |

This is an excellent job overall. If you have talent for the work, it will probably be easy and quick to complete, depending on the assignment. It can also be enjoyable and fulfilling, for those who enjoy problem-solving. Those who don't (or who don't have a natural ability for it) may find things more frustrating, and should probably consider another line of work.
Some workplaces will be better than others, of course; however, with experience and skills, you will find it fairly easy to find work elsewhere if things get unpleasant. In many cases you will work for people who have little or no understanding of what you do, so micro-management is less likely; as long as you keep things working and on schedule, your performance will generally be considered good.
