I have tips or advice for people considering this career - don't get higher then a Bachelor's degree if you don't want to, you can teacher two year colleges and some 4 year colleges without a phd. Yes I would reccomend this career. If you had it to do over again, I would still choose to go into this career. The pros are that it is fun and peaceful. The cons are that it doesn't pay that much and it is difficult to get a raise. What should people know about this career that they might not have heard about is that many positions are unadvertised - you have to get a referral to get an interview.
You have to like being able to explain things to people - and you have to like people! I am so happy to be getting paid to do what I like, and to have the freedom to do research as I please (and can get funding for....). I like to read and experiment with stuff, and of course I like to program or I wouldn't be in this field.
I chose this career by accident - but I am very glad I did! Despite all the faculty meetings and increased workloads, I really enjoy that moment when I see that someone has *finally* understood what loops or design patterns are all about!
