I managed a group of Infrastructure Analysts and Engineers. I have often heard the term, "herding cats" when referring to the management of IT professionals, and each time I hear it I think it's very appropriate.
Managing people is hard, and I have managed people in general business. To be a good manager, you have to play the roles of mother, disciplinary figure, psychologist, and friend, all at the same time. If one of your employees does something wrong, it becomes your problem.
Managing IT professionals is even harder. Most people in IT are know-it-alls and are very cocky and arrogant. They can't handle constructive feedback, even if it is delivered in the most tactful manner possible.
On the other hand, there are some good things about being an IT manager. The pay is very good, and if you're good at what you do, you're compensated well for it. The job market is also very good, and other companies will seek you out for recruiting purposes.
I recommend that people think long and hard about whether or not they really want to be an IT manager. It is most difficult when someone is a strong individual performer and he or she is offered the opportunity to manage others. I have seen many technicians fail when promoted to management, because the skill set is completely different. |
