Those considering the field of school social work should obtain a degree (bachelors and preferably masters) in Social Work and also obtain a certificate in School Social Work. Generally this means completing a year-long internship in a school and taking several education-related social work classes on top of your regular courseload.
This career is recommended for those who can work well independently, have excellent communication skills, have confidence in working with various diverse subpopulations, who are able to work in a multi-disciplinary setting, and who have a thorough knowledge of their area's human services.
Pros of the field are that you usually have generous amounts of vacation time because generally you follow the school calendar, you would likely be working on the same schedule as your children if you have any, pay generally goes up each year of experience, and job security is good.
Cons are that you have very little opportunity for career advancement in the field, work is generally done alone without the assistance of others for support, families need so much more help than you are able to provide (which can be extremely frustrating and demoralizing), pay is lower than for many other professions, and frequently school social workers are assigned to several schools and carry caseloads of several hundred students.
If I were to "do it over again", I likely would not have chosen this career. Although most days I enjoy my job, it is difficult to "keep your chin up" in the field of social work. Hours are long, the workload is incredibly intense, and the pay is not great, which makes one reconsider whether they should have chosen another career!
As far as what people should know about this career that they might not have heard about is that the caseloads are so high. Many school social workers have hundreds of high-need children that they are responsible for assisting and following up on, which is much higher than an average social worker. |
