I am a small business owner of a health store. I sell vitmains, herbs, natural bath and body items, natural foods, etc. I do have two part-time employees but they only work a few hours a month. I handle most sales, all ordering, advertising, scheduling, etc. I enjoy attending seminars and staying educated so I can pass the knowledge on to my customers. It is a lot of pressure to be a business owner - especially since I am a female who is now 21 years old. I have utilized my 7 years of office experience but did not have any prior wisdom in advertising and I also have a hard time actually sharing the information I have in my head. The biggest pro to my career is that I am my own boss and also that I get to help people and teach them to take control of their health instead of relying on the medical world.
People need to understand that the Lord created plants and foods for healing and in most circumstances, if you take care of your body nutrtionally, physically, emotionally, and spirtually, most health problems will be avoided. |

I am the owner of a retail store. Along with being the owner, comes the responsiblity of being the buyer, the personnnel and operations manager, the executive that makes all the decisions, and even the janitor!
Owning and operating your own business is not for the timid or faint of heart. In my experience, there are just as many ups as there are downs. If you are not money saavy, I would also not recommend this job. Do not expect to get rich, although some people do, it's rare. If you are passionate and truly believe in your business, getting rich will be a nice perk, but shouldn't be the main motivator. Unfortunately, money is just as important as passion when you are an entrepeneur. Since opening my store, I have realized that money truly does make the world go 'round. I can't imagine anyone in business believing otherwise.
Preparation in key! If I had it to do over again, I would have prepared more, and I would've planned out finances better. But I would definitely do it all over again. In my opinion, the least known fact about owning your own business is that you'll be in debt. You'll owe money to various outlets, and that's OK. In most cases you have to spend money to make money. There is no way around it. |

I am an entrepreneur, and run several start-up companies. I'm 27 years old, and studied hard for an MBA at a top university, to make sure that I understood the basics of business before I took the plunge. An MBA, or similar course such as those offered by the Chartered Institute of Marketing, will be of enormous benefit to you in this career.
I'd thoroughly recommend becoming the CEO of your own business. It's very varied work, and often very interesting. I get to set my own hours, my own pay, and see the businesses run as I want them to run. The products are designed to my standards. Basically, I'm in control. That's the great benefit. It's also the source of all the worries! If there are problems anywhere in the business, I have to know about them, and I have to fix them.
Often I'll work long hours, perhaps 60 hours a week, perhaps more, depending on how busy I am at the time. But I enjoy the job, so it doesn't feel like work.
Most people can start a business, although to succeed you'll need to work hard. You've got to understand that. Even the overnight success stories you've heard about were usually many years in the making. Running a business is a big commitment, but the pay and the satisfaction can make it one of the best things you'll ever do. You just have to have confidence, and build a network of people who can help you to succeed. Good luck! |
