Perseverance is probably the best attribute for people to go into this career. Research can be the most rewarding thing or the most frustrating thing. It doesn't matter how 'smart' you are, you can succeed if you care. I would recommend this career to anyone interested in the sciences. Doing it over again, not only would I pick the same career, but I would do things that would accelerate my success, knowing now in retrospect. Obvious pros are glory, money, intellectual stimulation. Cons include dealing with anti-social people (scientists), low money earnings in beginning, long hours. This career, though may not be obvious, stimulates more things than appear. Problem solving, money management, organization, are all tacit skill acquired.

I currently work for an in-vitro diagnostic device manufacturer. I would heartily recommend this career field, as it offers much room for advancement, many companies pay for continuing education, and the pay and benefits are generally good within the field. People who have worked their way up to office-level positions are often paid more than those working on the laboratory floor, and those considering working in the manufacturing lab must be willing to work long hours. I would definitely go into this career field again, though instead of entering the field via manufacturing I would have entered via Quality Assurance, as the pay and room for advancement are greater in the QA portion of this field.

Starting a career in biology is a very promising career with many options for the future! Biotech is just beginning to really kick off and it also gives you a chance to really make an impact on future generations through the discoveries you make. Overall a very rewarding, very comfortable life-style.
