I am a research scientist working with viruses and I love what I do. In order to do my job, you first need a bachelor's degree in some biological science (preferably biochemistry and/or molecular biology), followed by an advanced degree (masters, Ph.D.). Given the chance to start over, I would still pick this career as I have always had an interest in infectious disease and pathogens (especially viruses).
I would recommend this career if you are inquisitive, patient, and have a passion for science, biology, or the love of life itself. It isn't easy and rarely yields clear answers, so the pay-off doesn't always equal the work you put into it. This is also true for the pay - biologists aren't the best-paid workers, but we are certainly the happiest because we are doing something we love to do.
The hours can be flexible depending on your boss, but because so much rests on your progress, this can also mean very long hours (for instance, yesterday I worked a 21-hour day). But because I am doing something I love and helping humanity in general, it really doesn't bother me. |

I am a forensic scientist, specifically DNA Analyst for the Armed Forces, working to get soldiers from the Vietnam and Korean Wars and WWII identified and returned to their families for burial. One thing I've noticed is with the popularization of forensic science by TV shows like CSI and the like, a lot of people are majoring in forensic science. Unfortunately, once they get into the field and find its not like TV, they don't like it. Only then do they realize that it would have been better to major in a broader field, like general biology. In that case, while you are still qualified to work in forensics, you also have a lot of other career options to look to in case it doesn't work out like you planned. If you're pigeon-holed with a degree in just forensics, you're kind of stuck. I would definitely choose to go into this field again, as it is very rewarding to help these families. |
