Advice: Do not become a bartender if you do not enjoy people who are intoxicated. You must enjoy the "work" of bartending in order to get the tips - you should have the patience and the ability to verbally handle ANY situation! The pros are: meeting new people and of course, the cash! The cons: it can be a dangerous field dealing with strangers who are fine one second and over the edge the next second. I've bartended for 16 years and yes - I would choose the same profession again. Bartending is mentally and at times physically exhausting!!

The thing I would say about this career is that it is repetative work and there is more to the job then you might think there is. The pros for this job are as you might expect you get to comunicate with lot of different people of different ages, the job makes you more confident. The cons are definetly the unsociable working hours, the money isn't great and you can sometimes come across quite agressive customers. I would not recommend this career to anyone who thinks that it is the easy option because there is alot of tiresome hours involved, if I did my time over again I would still have choosen this career as I want to progress to the management side of things.

Bartending is an excellent job if you enjoy personal interaction with a wide variety of people. It is a great job for me while in school because the hours allow me to keep a full time job while attending school full time. Personal interation in a fast paced environment is key to success in this position.

Bartending is an excellent source of income if you don't mind the hours. Working nights and weekends is very tiring. The people you meet and money you make do make up for it. I would choose this career again as it is a skill that long after you leave the job is useful. If you ever loss your job say in an office job you can find a bartending job and make good income.

Bartending is fun, but there are things to consider before choosing it as a career. How are your people skills for one. If you do not function well in group settings, then this job is not for you. Second, can you handle multitasking? Sometimes you will be asked to make more than one thing at a time and people will be counting on you to produce results in a timely manner. Some of the Pros of being a bartender include making great money and always having cash readily available. It could mean the difference between having money for bills the next day or the next month. Some of the cons are worth considering, however. Bartenders have to be able to handle critics. Not everyone is going to like the drinks you prepare. They may even express a preference for other bartenders over you. Be diplomatic. Ask them what they think you can improve upon and if the advice is sound, take it into consideration. After all, it's about customer service. They make up most of your salary. Also, when you get people and alcohol together, the level of sexual tension skyrockets. Not only will you become a target for unwated advances, but you must also be aware of potentially dangerous situations involving your customers. If I had it to do all over again, I would still choose to bartend. It provided me with a good income and the opportunity to meet many interesting people. Also, I learned to flex my creative muscles as far as drink preperation went.
