I absolutely love the career I chose. Passion is what drives this career for most pilots that I work with and know. Advise for people considering this career would be: Know the costs that are involved (approx. $50,000 CAN to get all of your required licences and ratings), also be realistic (most people have to work as a flight instructor or bush/rampie for a couple of years prior to getting their first real pilot job, know that when you get your commercial licence you only have 200 hours and most airlines are looking for a couple of thousand hours, career is all about logging hours and moving up to more complex airplanes. I would highly recommend this career for those who do their research and are willing to spend many years of thier lives starving off of very little money to start out and those who have a lot of patience. The pros of this job are: the ability to have an office in the sky and to see the sunshine (above the clouds) everyday, the pay...but a long way down the road, the ability to travel. The cons are, very, very little pay to start (First officers for delta connection and comair in the US are making approx. $18,000 a year to start!) and the odd working times (many early mornings). And finally, I think that the biggest thing that most people entering this career don't know about is the amount of time that it takes to get to the airlines. most think that you get your commercial licence and away you go to the airlines. Unfortunately it doesn't work like that. I think that's it! |

This is a wonderful career because of all the personalities you encounter on a daily basis. I meet people from all walks of life and when I take a minute to say hello and ask how they're doing, I usually find I'm rewarded with a great feeling of community and fellowship. This is a very stable way of earning a living no matter what you hear on the news. I would chose this career again if given a choice. If you are not a personable human being with a very outgoing, open way of looking at the world, then this job is certainly not for you. You will meet people who think, believe and live very differently from you and you have to learn to accept your differences. You're usually in a cramped, small space for days at a time with a person that you would never be friends with in your daily life, but have to make this assignment go faster and more smoothly and therefore, have to learn to be open-minded. Some of the cons of this job is being away from home for days at a time. Not being able to get home or make any solid plans is another downer. On the plus side, your would visit places you never thought your would, meet people from all walks of life. It really gives you a broader perspective of people with different beliefs, morals, sexual oreintation and values. |

Being an airline pilot is not alwats fun. When I first started, back in 1983, everything seemed to be so amazing to me; knowing new places, meet new people, learning about new cultures. I always wanted to travel and also, being responsible for a huge machine like a 747 and have in my back, over 150 passengers. I´ve been working as a pilot for over 20 years, and I have to say that after my 5th year, it started to be boring. I don´t have time for my family, I haven´t seen my kids growing, because I am always "away". What makes me feel good about my career is that I´ve been to every single continent on earth, I have a good salary, but my favorite part is when I´m alone in the cabin looking to the horizon hearing God´s voice. I love my job! |
