As I've always said, "this sure beats working for a living". As an Air Force pilot, I've been places and seen things that can't be enjoyed by any other profession. The easiest way to join is through ROTC in college, so chose a college with AFROTC. Apply for their scholarships, by far the best next to sport scholarships. You will be working with superior people. You'll not have the petty bosses you have in the civilian workforce, you'll have a professional who'll treat you right. Lots of responsibility and personal fulfillment are yours for the asking. Cons? The family separations are difficult, "hurry up and wait" can be frustrating, and you will get hot and sweaty. Overall, though, you can't beat being an aircrew member, either officer or enlisted. |

If you're considering flight crew in the Air Force, remember that you are first a leader and an Officer. Seek out leadership opportunites and roles. Even better if you can do them because that's what you want to do, rather than because it's something that will improve your resume. This career has been truly rewarding, for travel, training, experience and people. I would certainly do it over again, even in spite of the long, irregular hours, dangerous work and separation from family and the lifestyle too many of us take for granted. Last piece of advice: expand your horizons; read widely, travel, have many friends and many experiences. |
