My chosen career is as a Barefoot Equine Podiatrist, and Lameness Rehabilitator. I work with horses, ponies, mules, and donkeys, correcting hoof problems, and providing preventative care to their hooves.
Farrier science has been around for well over 200 years, and not much has changed in that time frame. However, there is a select group of researchers that have begun to delve deeper into the equine hoof, and learn how to correct problems and prevent problems with out using a shoe of some sort.
The ideal candidate for this job has to have a deep desire to learn anatomy, and be able to handle horses very well. A lifetime of being around horses is a plus. I can not suggest you enter this field in the equine industry if you do not have patience, a mechanical aptitude, willingness to learn on a constant basis, and be very physically fit. This is a very intense job, and can be very dangerous at times as well. The rewards are great- not only in financial gain, but in satisfaction. When you know that the reason the horse standing in front of you is sound and comfortable, and in some cases still ALIVE, there is an emotional pay off that is tremendous.
Would I choose this line of work again? Yes. Unhesitatingly, resoundingly, yes. Horses and other equids have been a passion of mine since birth, and I can not envision any other life.
This section of farrier science is fairly new to the equine realm, and there are many misconceptions out about barefoot hoof care. I advise interested people to research, research, ask questions, observe, and spend time with a barefoot hoof care provider. The equine industry is huge, and a good living can be made in this sector of it. But it is NOT for the faint of heart, either.
