Classics and Classical Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics, General:
I spent four years learning vocabulary, mastering grammar, and reading literature in Latin. I learned about all the mythological characters of ancient Greece and Rome. I became familiar with the culture of the time of the Roman emperors and took a course in Roman Law as well. I also studied some Ancient Greek (alphabet, vocabulary, and grammar) and read some Ancient Greek literature. Although I found the Greek boring, I was thoroughly fascinated by the rest of the course work. However, there are very limited employment opportunities for a graduate with a Classics degree. One can become a teacher on the middle school, high school or college level, but there is not much else available specifically for Classics majors. I would not recommend it as a course of study unless someone had a passion for it.

Spanish Language and Literature:
I really enjoyed my college major. I love languages, learning languages, and learning about other cultures. I was able to study abroad in Spain and through language I was able to get to know people I wouldn't otherwise get to know, I got to experience another culture and way of living first hand, and I made a lot of great memories. I would definitely choose this major again if I were to go back. In fact, I am going to continue studying for a master's. Advice for people considering this major is that first, keep in mind that language learning isn't something that happens overnight. It takes a lot of work including a lot of reading and writing. I often had much more work to do than any of my roommates, but it was worth it. Another bit of advice I would give is to have a double major in something that gives you a skill (teaching, business, nursing, etc.) because it is hard to find a job with just a language degree. there are plenty of people out there who can speak a language, so it is hard to find something that is not customer service or data entry oriented. I graduated with honors, and another degree in French but jobs are hard to come by without something else. For this reason, I went back to school for a teaching certificate. This would be the only con I could think of (other than the amount of work compared to other majors), but the pros far outweigh this. Like I said, I wouldn't go back and change my major, as I loved it and still do. I would definitely recommend this major to others. |

French Language and Literature:
A previous background in French is not required for this major, but you must be motivated and love language learning. Understanding and critiquing literature are also vital skills. I would recommend this major if you genuinely love linguistics, language leanring, literature, and French culture. If I had to do it over again, I would still have chosen this major, but I would have done a concentration in French and World Business in order to have some more marketable skills from the undergraduate degree. The cons of a major in French are that it is not very marketable in most of America. On the other hand, the linguistic, literary, and cultural skills one learns is excellent preparation for graduate work in other fields, such as law. |

Linguistics:
Linguistics is a major that is intellectually stimulating, inherently interesting and preparatory for an increasingly global world. I would reccomend it. I would choose this major again right from the beginning. The pros and cons.

Spanish Language and Literature:
Studying Spanish Language and Literature is a great liberal arts degree. Learning a second language well is imperative in this country, and it will be beneficial no matter what field you choose to pursue. The language aspect provides a strong understanding of English grammar, while the literature aspect provides an excellent base for Western culture and history. I would definitely recommend studying this language, due to the increasing number of Spanish-speaking individuals in our country and due to the increasing force of Hispanic culture in the United States. I would definitely choose this major again. It has helped me immensely throughout my career (I went on to study Bilingual Speech Pathology and I ultimately became a physician), and it has enriched my life with a different cultural perspective. I would say any drawbacks of a Spanish Language degree would only involve the need to have a double major or a second degree (as in my situation) if you choose to pursue a field other than language/literature education or a career in writing/research (although it can be a little more expensive in time and money, this route is more desirable/marketable, as it allows you to be more well-rounded). |

Linguistics:
I loved my applied linguistics course. It really opened my eyes to how language is used in everyday life to communicate. However, most people don't know much about linguistics, and think it just means to know several different languages. I would recommend linguistics courses for anyone interested in language, either for the purposes of teaching languages, translating, studying business communications or even writing. All of those different topics can utilise linguistic knowledge. However, as the general public does not know this, it makes selling your degree very difficult. (Unless you're a TESOL teacher or study linguistics in terms of technology.)
In summary: a fascinating field, applicable in many different ways, but it's still hard to find a job. Specialisation helps with the job search. |

German Language and Literature:
This is a good major only in combination with another subject, preferably an engineering or business based discipline. Due to time constraints, I only finished the German degree on its own. It is not completely worthless as a BA is the new high school diploma and you need a degree to get your foot in the door, but it would have been far, far more useful in conjunction with another BA/BS.
If you are considering this major, make sure that you take every chance to study abroad in a German speaking country. There are plenty of scholarships and other aid available to study abroad. There is no excuse.
Another piece of advice I would give is that German departments normally aren't too large and you can get to know your professors very well. I can't stress how important it is to make a good, lasting impression on your professors. You will need them later as recommenders for a slew of things including potential job prospects and graduate school applications.
I would do this degree again, but I would make sure next time that I paired it with another good major first. |

One the one hand: everyone is impressed by this major. On the other hand: that doesn't get you jobs.
One the one hand: it doesn't offer practical knowledge. On the other hand: it teaches you how to think.
I probably would not have chosen this major had I really known what I wanted to do with my life - but then I still don't. I was very burnt out of school by the end of my sophomore year, and this is all I had ever planned on doing. I have forgotten much of what I learned because I could not use it daily.
If you are not certain, minor in it, or take classes. But realize that this major is for two people: people who love it and want to study it forever, and people who want to use it as a tool to strengthen their minds and then do something else. |

Definitely recommended, but as a second major for people who aren't planning on continuing study through grad school. You get a lot of experience with Latin, which will help you learn any language and will help you understand English grammar so much better. It is fascinating and enlightening to see the roots of the Western tradition and to read the words of ancient people in their original form - it really helps you realize the bias often inserted into translations!
I would deinitely choose this major again if I had it all to do over again. For anyone wanting to get a good foundation in literature and languages, this is the major for you. The downside is that it's a bit time consuming with all the translations and that no one actually knows what you are studying without you having to explain it. |

Linguistics:
It's not an easy major. It requires a lot of thinking and analysis, and is great preparation for many careers, even if you don't want to be a linguist. If you like languages but can't pick a single language to study, you might want to consider linguistics -- you learn something about so many languages. If I had to do it all again, I'd still pick linguistics. |

Japanese Language and Literature:
If you're considering majoring in Japanese Language and Literature, you need to ask yourself if you're truly interested in learning everything about the Japanese culture. Not only will you need to be good at studying languages, but you will need a desire to learn the political history, religious history, and civil history of Japan. You will need to have a good grasp on the geography of the nation, as well as the relationships between Japan and all the nearest countries, especially Russia, China, North and South Korea, all the small nations of the south pacific, and their closest economic partner, the United States. This major can be frustrating at times, because of the huge effort that will be required simply for studying the language, which is difficult and confusing. And you have to understand that a degree in this major isn't really all that useful. Like getting a bachelor's degree in English, the bachelor's itself is more of a stepping stone to an eventual doctorate. But the bachelor's degree won't end up landing you great important jobs that pay well, you're more likely to get a well-paying job based on a high level of skill with the language as an interpreter, which obviously isn't something that even needs a degree. However, if you're interested in teaching English in Japan, this degree will suffice and help you out in that respect. If I had my entire college life ahead of me again, and knew what I now know, I would definitely choose this major again, but I would more likely add a second major in something a bit more useful, maybe a hard science like chemistry or a business major. |

Linguistics:
A great major if you love languages and have an analytical side. One of the beauties of Linguistics is the huge variety of sub-categories, ranging from computational linguistics (software) to neurolinguistics (wetware) to semantics (meaning), sociolinguistics, and so forth. It really possible to bend linguistics toward many other majors. |

German Language and Literature:
Unless you intend to be an academic in the humanities, German is generally not a useful language. If you study German history, or music history in general, it's helpful to have German, and taking German as a double major is a good excuse to go live there and improve your language skills.
However, in the business world, or in academia outside some selected areas of the humanities, German is pretty well useless. Most Germans speak English far better than you could hope to speak German -- they've been learning English since elementary school. |

Spanish Language and Literature:
This major, although by no means easy to complete, is rewarding in the end. Learning any new language will open doors, learning Spanish is especially useful today because there are so many Spanish speakers. Although jobs can be hard to find with a Spanish major, if you can think outside the box then it is not hard to find a rewarding career. Teaching isn't for everyone, but I don't know anyone who doesn't like to get paid to travel! |

Most of the jobs these days are in technology and education. I've worked in both and like them. If this appeals to you then go for it. I'd defiitley still choose this major. A pro is that it's fascinating. A con is that it prepares you for a relatively narrow set of carreer choices. |

French Language and Literature:
Certainly, the study of any language and culture helps a person to better understand his or her own language and culture. It also teaches objectivity vis-a-vis one's home culture and a new world view. Indeed to be able to read about current events from another point of view in another language can broaden our understanding of the impact such events have outside our borders.
What is fascinating about the French is that their chauvinism about their culture is very similar to that which we have in the US, but lacking the flag-waving patriotic furor we revel in. They have a beautiful language, a beautiful country, fascinating art and literature (many of our ideas of what democracy is came from French writers). Studying abroad for a year is usually recommended and plays a major part in appreciating what is learned in class. I would definitely recommend studying it.
The main con of taking French is possibly limiting the kinds of employment after graduation: most French majors take French to teach it afterwards. Translation is another option. A double-major of French and international relations or business opens further avenues to work with multinationals in the US or abroad, or going into diplomacy.
I'm probably lucky, however, because I finished my degree before the diplomatic tensions which arose between the US and France over the war in Iraq. I wonder if French students do not suffer today from the negative press anything French received at that time. I personally do not regret my choice and would make it again if I had the possibility. |

French Language and Literature:
I very much enjoyed my French major. I had the opportunity to study one summer in Quebec, which was so much fun and so educational in both the French language and in life in general. Because of where I live (the south) there is little demand for French outside of French teachers in high schools, which is not what I wanted to do. Now I'm working on my master's degree in English literature, and the French degree has been very helpful with it. For a master's you have to have a reading knowledge of at least one foreign language, and knowing a good deal about European history and culture is helpful for any sort of literature course, whether it's British lit or postcolonial lit.
If you're interested in majoring in French, consider having a business major or minor as well, if you do not plan on going into graduate school. This will greatly increase your marketability after graduation, especially in the northeast and along the US/Canada border. |

Japanese Language and Literature:
A program to major in Japanese includes elements from three catetories (see below): (I) courses designed to develop competence in the four skills of the Japanese language; (II) courses taught in English and focused on the mainstream of Japanese culture as reflected in literature, drama, film, and linguistics; (III) courses related to Japan offered in other departments of Arts and Sciences. To fulfill the requirements for the major one must complete the following:
[a] Third Year Japanese 2 (or the equivalent), plus one course at the advanced level.
[b] three courses chosen from offerings in the department's Category II listing. This includes 0083 (mandatory for all majors), and at least one linguistics course (1022, 1023, 1025 or 1035). One of these courses should be selected from those marked with an asterisk ("W" courses), in conjunction with which the student enrolls in JPNSE 1908).
[c] four courses related to Japan offered in other deprtments.
