Sociology:
My major in undergraduate school was actually Social Work. I wanted to pursue a career in Social Work because of the many problems that those less fortunate (adults and children) around the world were experiencing and wanted to make a difference in the world as it related to those problems. However, after I graduated with my BA degree in hand, it was extremely difficult to get a position in the field of Social Work with just a BA degree. It was almost REQUIRED that I go back to school for my masters. I was very disappointed in that, because I felt that 4 years of college and a mountain of student loans should have accounted for at least a stable job when I graduated and that never did happen. It was a VERY difficult task to find a position in that field with just a BA degree, so, no..I would not recommend someone who was looking for an immediate position out of college to major in Social Work because of this reason. However, it did help me personally to study this major because it gave me more insight into the many problems that people are facing and drove me to want to volunteer a lot of my personal time to helping the homeless. I also substitute teach at an elementary school and have an opportunity there to "talk" to these children when they are hurting, so, I do believe that my field of study helped me in that area. If I had to do it over again, though, I would most likely choose the field of education, because teachers are always needed. It's a field that will always be in high demand as far as employment and it's also very fulfilling. You can also go very far in the field of education with only 2 years of education as a paraprofessional or as a teacher with a 4 year degree. Teachers also get a break on paying back their student loans as well. It's a great field to pursue a career in and very easy to obtain a job and keep a job in the field of education. t's a very good career choice. |

Social Sciences, Other:
Studying criminology is very valuable because it combines real life scenarios with research. I would choose it again because it is applicable to real life and interesting. Unfortunately, it is difficult to study populations which are large, and most criminology majors must go to graduate school to get a job. Still, it is very valuable information to understand crime. |

Sociology:
I found sociology to be quite interesting. I switched to it after my first year (started as a psychology major) because I found the first year class much more interesting than my first year psychology class. I don't really use this degree directly in my job, however it has provided me with some better insights when dealing with people. I think that I would probably still choose sociology as my major. This degree has a somewhat intensive statistics portion to it, so I recommend having a good math background before studying it. There aren't tons of jobs to get with just a Bachelor's degree though, getting a Master's degree too or taking a specialized post-grad programme would be recommended. |
