Social Sciences, General:
For anyone considering this major, it can get pretty intense sometimes, especially when you have to perform research studies. You have to gather all this raw data and calculate it, write up all the necessary information (how you gathered the data, the raw numbers of what you got, etc).
I would strongly recommend studying this because it actually prepares you well, especially if you are focusing on this as an undergraduate then going to graduate school following. In graduate school, there are just as much research to be done as part of certain classes.
I believe I would not still choose this major because my interests did change but it is still a great major for those interested in learning more about things. The pros of having this degree is that you know a lot about particular areas, but at the same time you are limited which also makes it a con. There are not a lot of fields open at this time for sociology majors, which makes it hard on those with this degree. |

Sociology:
My major in undergraduate school was actually Social Work. I wanted to pursue a career in Social Work because of the many problems that those less fortunate (adults and children) around the world were experiencing and wanted to make a difference in the world as it related to those problems. However, after I graduated with my BA degree in hand, it was extremely difficult to get a position in the field of Social Work with just a BA degree. It was almost REQUIRED that I go back to school for my masters. I was very disappointed in that, because I felt that 4 years of college and a mountain of student loans should have accounted for at least a stable job when I graduated and that never did happen. It was a VERY difficult task to find a position in that field with just a BA degree, so, no..I would not recommend someone who was looking for an immediate position out of college to major in Social Work because of this reason. However, it did help me personally to study this major because it gave me more insight into the many problems that people are facing and drove me to want to volunteer a lot of my personal time to helping the homeless. I also substitute teach at an elementary school and have an opportunity there to "talk" to these children when they are hurting, so, I do believe that my field of study helped me in that area. If I had to do it over again, though, I would most likely choose the field of education, because teachers are always needed. It's a field that will always be in high demand as far as employment and it's also very fulfilling. You can also go very far in the field of education with only 2 years of education as a paraprofessional or as a teacher with a 4 year degree. Teachers also get a break on paying back their student loans as well. It's a great field to pursue a career in and very easy to obtain a job and keep a job in the field of education. t's a very good career choice. |

Sociology:
Sociology was an excellent choice for me, because it deals with human society and behavior. It was interesting to learn about the sociology of work, sociology of sports, sociology of music, social problems, and even "deviant" behavior.
The biggest pro is also the biggest con: sociology is such a broad field. To be employable, it is important to specialize and plan to attend grad school! On the other hand, because sociology covers so many aspects of human life and behavior, it is an excellent base for so many graduate degrees.
I never regretted choosing Sociology as my major because I had so many interests and it was easy to take classes related to this field. Human society, groups, and dynamics are fascinating; anyone who has ever wondered how and why "normal" people behave in certain ways should definitely consider some sociology classes! |

Sociology:
If you genuinely care about improving the state of the world, want to better understanding the relations amongst different groups of people, or want to become a teacher then by all means consider a degree in Sociology. Unfortunately, if you want to make a lot of money or be an instant success in the corporate world, this is not the field for you. I graduated with honors three years ago, and to be honest, my degree has yet to improve my lot in life. I am currently planning to return to school to get my MBA, as a degree in Sociology has proved virtually useless so far, even in the non-profit sector. I don't regret studying Sociology, because I believe it is one of the most important subject areas there are worth learning. Basically, if you want to be a better person Sociology is the way to go, but if you want to make a difference in the professional world, you'd be better off studying Computer Science or Business and minoring in Sociology. |

Sociology:
I majored in Sociology because I had heard it was good preparation for law school. It was not. It was not a rigorous field to major in, however, but in retrospect, it was not a wise major to select, unless one intends to get a doctorate in Sociology, because it does not have a lot of practical applications. I believe in today's world, unless one is interested in pursuing a career as an educator, one should select a practical, business or career oriented field, such as accounting. The pros of a degree in sociology are that one learns: generally about human interaction, in a vague relationship to business practices. It is a relatively easy major. It is somewhat interesting. Cons: Little transferability of knowledge to practical endeavors. |
