Communication, Journalism, and Related Programs, Other:
Communication skills are essential in almost every field of professionalism. In my communication major I learned to debate, influence and clearly present issues both in speech and written form. I gained listening skills, critical thinking skills, and conflict resolution techniques.
Yes, I would choose this major again. It has been extremely helpful in my work as a counselor and educator, as well as making my postgraduate classes easier.
I find little cons regarding a communiction degree other than as a stand alone batchelors degree it may have limited income potential. The pro side, however, is image the income benefit to an attorney, a politician, or business person who has these skills. |

Radio and Television:
I absolutely LOVED my major when I was going to college. I stumbled upon it accidentally after taking an introductory course from a professor who was considered "dull and boring." I found him to be exciting, fascinating and motivational. I was hooked on studying radio and television and soon switched my major from English and liberal arts.
Unfortunately, when I got my degree, the jobs were few and far between and very low-paying. So I ended up getting a job in an unrelated field because I wanted to earn some money! But luckily for me, one of my former professors called me up and offered me a job at my college, managing a department in the television studio. I accepted ..... and the rest is history.
I spent several years working in my field, but since I went the school, the technology has changed the face of communication -- especially radio and television. Unless you are working in an environment that is on the cutting edge (meaning they have to have BIG BUCKS), you will find yourself out of the loop pretty quickly. So while you're a student, make sure you find internships and other opportunities where you can soak in as much information as possible, to make you a valuable asset.
Would I choose this major again? Probably not. Not because I don't love it, but because I would want something more stable. Although I didn't think of health care in the beginning, that is what I might study now (given the chance).
Those who are passionate about communications SHOULD pursue their dream, but please understand that the competition today is even more fierce and the jobs even less available. (Automation has done away with so many jobs.) You have to be truly talented to succeed. And you have to have THICK SKIN and be able to take rejection.
If you can do that, then enjoy the program at whatever school you choose! |

Journalism:
Journalism MUST be a passion for contemporary students to consider it as a major because, with the advent of the web, everyone can call herself a journalist or writer. It is a noble, wonderful field of study if you have the right teachers. The teaching in the field is often uneven. (Woe to those who find themselves in a class with a washout with an axe to grind, be it journalism, advertising, or any other academic class.)
Being involved in a journalism curriculum is a great way to learn about and get in the thick of life on campus. If you are in a truly good program, you will be out reporting on everything from tuition hikes to football tailgating and writing alumni profiles. You'll get to write lots (which is fun and the reason for being a journalist!) and read even more. And covering campus events -- lectures, dance, theatre, sports -- is also a bonus.
If you're on the fence, you would do well to find a mentor or an internship in journalism and concentrate efforts on studying some other area -- economics, polisci, biology, physics -- that gives you a solid grounding in a subject area of interest that you may want to cover as a reporter. Many news organizations would prefer to have a bright person that THEY can train to gather news and write the way THEY want rather than someone with a degree in the field.
You must also become proficient in a second language to increase your ultimate worth in the job market. Given the current political climate, savvy students would do well to concentrate on Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, or Korean.
Would I choose this major again? In a heartbeat. And I would still pursue a second, probably even a third, major. |

Communication, Journalism, and Related Programs, Other:
My major was Communication alone. If you consider Communication, I highly recommend considering getting a Masters. I would not recommend studying this because when I found jobs I was interested in, my major was rarely listed as one they preferred. So, as a Communication major, you compete with the Business Major for the HR position, or the Sociology Major for the Humans Service opening, etc. I don't regret so I am content with my degree. The pro is it is a great middle ground for people who just aren't sure. They know they love people and how organizations work but Business as a major seems to boring and social work seems to narrow. The con is it isn't very specific. Here is another pro, I was hired as an intern because my perspective was different from the other interns, and I see how my major benefits the jobs that I get. And it is beneficial in a way that social work or business is not. |

Public Relations, Advertising, and Applied Communication, Other:
Public relations coursework offers students who have many interests and talents a viable way to earn a living capitalizing on many areas: journalism, business, marketing, advertising and communications.
Strong writing, research, marketing, trending and managment skills are all requisite for success in public relations. Chief among them is strong writing, as most public relations specialists write article, press releases and Web site copy while working directly with journalists, publishers and advertising executives.
I can't tell you how many times over the years I've heard from my friends who settled for English degrees lament that they couldn't find a job, weren't prepared for finding real work after graduation and were upset they couldn't just write for a living like they'd planned.
As a public relations professional, I have found a career where I can write about a host of topics, network with other professionals and actually have instruments in place to measure the success of my writing. It has led to a very fulfilling career thus far, and I'm excited by the new doors that open every day. |

Mass Communication / Media Studies:
This major is for someone interested in advertising or the Audio/Visual field. No tips, but be prepared for a hard, competitive career. People who chose this life are faced with constantly changing technology, new, younger competition, and outdated learned skills. I wouldn't recommend anyone chose this field unless you have a well defined career path, instant job placement, or spot on personality suited for it. The pros for this major include working for yourself, meeting new people, and, if you are good, getting ahead quickly. Of course the cons out way the pros. They include a rocky, unknown future, possible short term career, and impossible to meet goals. |
