  Political Science and Government, General:

Politics is a phenomenal major if you plan on attending law school or graduate school in the field of political science. Also, it gives a good depth of knowledge over the principles governing the structures of society. However, it is heavily based on theory and much of the reading is mundane. I would recommend studying this major if you enjoy comparing major theories and schools of thought. The pros to this major are that you gain a greater understanding of the governmental structure of society. The cons are that it does not allow for a great degree of creativity or abstraction from the major modes of societal influence.

This is a great major for those who are interested in people, society and decision-making. You read a lot, write a lot and analyze a lot. The con is that there's not a lot of real world practicality that comes with this majors unless you volunteer or dfo an internship. A tip for those considering this is to be open minded and to stick up for yourself. This major, especially in colleges near capitals, is competitive and everyone wants attention. If I were to do it all over again, I would take this majors except I would also focus on international politics.

There is no greater service a citizen can do to be active in their politics, than to be educated about them. This major opens many career doors, and the possibilities are endless. I am studying international politics and really enjoy it. The course loads generally end up being heavy, but in the long run this prepares you for any job challenge.

I was a political science major from Mercer University. I liked studying it and I enjoyed the class discussions. Political science is interesting because it touches on the personalities of the politicians, which can be pretty extreme. So tghe lectures and the reading were fun and exciting.
However, I found it not to be extremely practical like a skill that will guarantee a job. I don't think it is very marketable. Sometimes I wished I obtained a specific degree that would have been in high demand. But I chose that major because it was perceived by me to be fairly easy to obtain.

I really enjoyed this major. I definitely would recommend those interested in both politics and law to at least consider this major. I learned a lot about politics, which puts me more in the know about what's happening in the news compared to my friends. I also think that it is a good way get into law school and other government positions.

Political science is a diverse field of study that is great for people with skills in economics, social science, philosophy, international studies, administration, and other skills. Employers have found my political science training to be valuable, since they consider poli. sci. to provide solid analytical, writing, synthesis and argumentation skills - more so than other social sciences. I've found excellent jobs in both the public (government) and private (consulting and not-for-profit) sectors. I would definitely recommend it for this reason. It is also a great area of study for people considering post-graduate studies in other areas like those mentioned above. The only drawbacks are that poli. sci. is not seen as quite as rigorous as, say, economics or business administration, and if employers had to choose between a poli. sci. grad and an economics grad, the economics grad might have a better chance. Also, the quality of teaching is extremely variable, and professors often have an ideological agenda that they want to promote (be it right-wing or left-wing); it's good to have a strong critical and analytical disposition to deal with this.

While political science is an interesting major it does not give you many job options after school. I had a hard time finding a job that paid well and had anything to do with PS. I had job offers, but they were so far from PS and anything that I had learned, that I did not feel I could do well if I had taken the job. I ended up going to an Alternative Teaching Program and got a degree to teach.

Many people use political science as a "pre-law" degree. I do not believe there's anything wrong with this, but it's not necessary and I would suggest that a person do a different major as a pre-law degree so the result is a well-rounded individual. The other thing people seem to believe is that political science is a way to learn to "do politics" - this is also not true. But if you wish to study the inter-relationships of power and begin to understand the subtext behind what people say on the news, political science is a facinating experience.

Political science was my second choice, after business. But along the way I realized that I wanted to learn more about the world, governments, and the way the world worked. It was suggested I take political science courses as electives and soon I was hooked. I switched majors and am glad I did. I still took business courses, but the poly sci courses really gave me a framework for business oriented things. We did surveys, polls, discussed their outsomes and got a little lost in theories along the way.

It was a great education for me, I enjoyed myself and broadened my horizons. Looking back, political science has helped me in my job and everyday life. Best stated, it gave me freedom to think and learn.

This major requires a very strong ability to think critically - simply "BS-ing" will not suffice. Strong reading abilities will also make getting by in classes a lot easier. I would probably not choose this major again because I cannot think that critically. The pros of a political science major is that it teaches you to think bigger, but the cons is that it's not directly applicable to a specific career; although a political science degree is good for law schools.

Anyone considering this major should consider if they like government or human resources. i would suggest before you take this as a mojor you get some kind of job that has to do with governemnt. You have to always learn the changes law and remember the old ones. You must have a great background and be able to get security clearnece for most government jobs. if you like a challenge I would tell you to study Political Science & Goivernment.i have known since I was 15 that I wanted to study this major and I would do it again in a heart beat. The pros are goernment Jobs have the best benefits, great hours, paid holidays, and you never get bored by always feeling you are doing the same thing over and over again. The cons in this major are hard to come by there is only one thing and that is It is not easy to get a job in government. There is alot of steps you take before you gwet approved, but once you do you will have a job for the rest of your life.

Everyone should study political science, even if they don't want to necessarily major in it. In terms of content, I can't think of a knowledge base more important to our society. Also, any extended study of the field will train students in writing, research, analytical skills, and critical thinking.

I am currently a lobbyist and my major has greatly helped me. I understand the political processes and dynamic behind the system, which helps me find success. The major also stimulated a lot of thought I felt I learned many useful things.

This major directly relates to jobs having to do with lobbying, working on campaigns or teaching. I think it is a good major/minor to be coupled with something else like business, economics, or public affairs because it will give you the background you need in order to understand the current state of things by giving you the history and attitude that have lead up to the current state. If I could do things over again, I would have gotten an accounting or business degree and minored in political science. I've met many people with political science degrees that aren't doing anything related to that field. At the very least it is a degree. I am glad to have studied political science because I feel like I know a lot more about what's going on in the world compared to many of my contemporaries. I think it teaches basic concepts and history that more people should know.

I chose this major because I wasn't sure if I wanted to go to law school or become a journalist, and I thought political science would be good in either case. I ended up doing a little of both, and this major served me well. I not only learned about governments, social programs and economics, I also learned how to write quick summations, as well as more lengthy projects. I have been able to use all I learned as a journalist, as a communications manager, and as a law student. I would definitely choose this major again.

Although I very much enjoyed the courses offered,this degree choice has not at all helped me in my pursuit of a career. Had I known that technology would be so important, I would have focused more on that Fortran class I took so many years ago and continued in that area of knowledge.

This major does not better than any other major when it comes to getting a job. This major however is very useful for getting into law school if your college does not have a pre-law program. I found this major very interesting and excelled in it if you like politics and how governments work this is the major for you.
