Business Administration and Management, General:
Tips for starting a business
Starting a business tips # 1
Stay current
Join an industry association related to your product or offering. Subscribe to all the magazines that cover your business. (They are tax deductible!) Look at joining an organization like NASE ( National Association of Self employed). They have great sources of advice and information as well as great discounts on insurance, rental cars, and other business expenses. Read and constantly be researching topics about your business. It's easy on the internet!
Starting a business tips # 2
Make sure you have a financial plan
Also a budget and a measurement process to keep track of how you are doing monthly (see: small business finance). If you don't know where you stand financially and have no short term and long term financial goals, then you are just letting fate dictate your success and we know those odds aren't too good. Control your own destiny!
Starting a business tips # 3
Cash forecasting
It sounds boring and difficult, but it's not. Keep it simple in new businesses. Look at your next 3 months projected income or revenue, then just lay next to it all the expenditures you need to keep the businesses running. The difference is your cash flow. You must do this to avoid surprises. Most businesses hit the brick wall because they fail to understand their cash flow.
Starting a business tip # 4
Get an advisory board or a mentor
Sounds crazy for a small operation? It's not! The board can be family members that you trust, or friends. Ask them to be your board of directors and review your business plans and results with them. Having someone to bounce ideas off and get an objective opinion is critical.
Starting a business tip # 5
Maintain a balance between work, play and family
This is critical for long term success. We all put in crazy hours on a short term basis to get a hot project done or the product out the door, but if you do this on a long term, regular basis it is a dangerous sign that you are losing perspective. You need to be able to step away on a regular basis and get your batteries re-charged. And also have time for family because if they suffer it is almost a sure bet your business will suffer too. New businesses ideas.
Starting a business tip # 6
Network
It's easy to get isolated in a home business or your own small business operation. Force yourself to get out and meet with others that can provide a business support structure for you. One of the benefits of a corporation is the workings of teams and the on going support structure it provides. You need to create that for yourself. Don't think you can do it all by yourself; By talking to others in business you will find out great ideas and it will help motivate you.
Starting a business tips # 7
Stay Motivated
One of the hardest aspects of a small business or home based business is creating the discipline or motivation to work each day. It is so easy to get distracted and put off the essential tasks that need to get done. Keep your work place and hours separate from the rest of your responsibilities. Develop a to-do list EVERYDAY. Set goals for the week. Review how you are doing against them. We all struggle with this and it is one of the key elements of success when starting a business.
Starting a business tips # 8
Don't rest on your laurels
Be prepared to always change. New businesses require that you force change. Look for things to do more efficiently or how to improve your offering or product. Constantly evaluate your competition and benchmark yourself against them.
Starting a business tips # 9
Do something you love
If you are in a business that you hate, then it is a good bet you won't be successful. Find where your true talents and skills are and get in a business that exploits them. The saying," if you do what you love and the money will follow" is so true, especially for people considering starting a business .
Small businesses are often run on a low budget and provide the means for men and women to earn a decent income without having to invest a huge amounts of money in start up costs.
Some advantages of operating a small businesses include:
The investment for running the business is not a major one. Small business grants, financial aid and economic support are readily available to small business owners from government run programs and other industries willing to provide small business grants. An aspiring business owner can often start a home-based business by applying for grants, loans and credits using a fairly hassle-free process.
Keeping track of business dealings in a small business can be easily maintained and updated. A business owner can setup an accounting system and store all transactions on a personal computer. Most accounting responsibilities are easily managed, however a qualified accountant can be useful in helping business owners make the reports and financial statements for better management.

Accounting:
I took multiple business and accounting courses in high school. After completing the courses, I decided that I would make accounting my concentration in college. I am currently a college freshmen. I am just beginning to take college level accounting, and I love it. While some of the courses are challenging, I'm very impressed with the amount of information I'm learning. I would most definitely recommend studying accounting because there will always be a need for accountants. The pros to having an accounting degree is that I have many options of where to work. All businesses have an accountant, if they aren't doing the work themselves. The only con I could possibly think of is that it's repetitive and can be boring to calculate numbers all day. |

1.Please have some work experience before you choose this major. Or you may feel this major is useless. 2.I would recommend this major if you have a high position. If you do a junior job, you shouldn't apply this. 3.I may choose somthing others. 4.It may do alot of help for your own business or you have a high position. It may useless when you only started you career in some firms. |

Accounting:
In such hard economic times such as the one that we are currently in, many jobs are being cut back. However, with the recent scandals surrounding wall street and companies going bankrupt many new regulatory laws will inevitably be passed. This provides huge opportunities for people who have degrees in accounting. Every company as well as independent auditing companies are going to need accountants to make sure that all of their business transactions are of legal nature. And even if you do not wish to go into the field of public accounting, a strong foundation within the field of accounting opens the doors of many opportunities Such as management, owning your own company, and even just keeping track of your own personal finances and taxes. Yes this is a pretty difficult major to enter into, but nothing in this world ever worth having was ever easy. So if you are looking to be successful I suggest studying accounting or at least providing yourself with a strong foundation of accounting knowledge and then go into anything that interests you. Many people have a false stereotype about accounting of it being just number crunching and boring. I can assure you that accounting is constantly changing and always thought provoking and interesting. If you enjoy problem solving then accounting is the major for you. |

Accounting:
This is a touch major to achieve. Not many people like the field because is does demand a lot of time, but I think it is worth it. The pay will definitely be worth the long nights of studying. Plus just think how many people are in need of accountants and how many people are actually becoming accountants. The demand is greater than the supply meaning you can demand a higher salary, just because you will be in demand. |

Logistics and Materials Management:
I would recommend studying Logistics and Materials Management. It is an interesting career field to get into. You should have good math and communication skills. You must also know how to use a computer. If I had to do it over again, I would choose this major. The pros of having a degree in this major is that there are a lot of job opportunities. If you are not good with talking to people then I would suggest another major. |

Entrepreneurial and Small Business Operations, Other:
This is a great degree for those not interested in big business but wants to start a business of thier own. The University of Arkansas Walton Business College has close ties to WalMart, so great guest lecturers and info on cutting edge retail technology. One of the required courses is creating a business plan, and you can work on your own business idea. This helps for getting advice from peers and professors. I would choose this degree program again. |

Fashion Merchandising:
I loved college with this major! All of my classes were so interesting. I NEVER dreaded going to my fashion classes because fashion is such an evolving subject. It never got boring. Learning about visual merchandising, design, and how clothing relates to human behavior was amazing. Be prepared to be creative and think outside the box because the fashion world is extremely competitive. It also helps to get hands on experience. I really believe that my degree in Fashion Merchandising helped me obtain my job at Complex magazine. Fashion companies look for people who have extreme knowledge in their field of expertise. Therefore, my degree in Fashion has helped me more than a degree in Journalism would have. |

Fashion Merchandising:
A great major for fashion lovers! I was never bored with class because everything was about the fashion industry. Sometimes my classes were a little harder than expected, but I was fine. Learning about visual merchandising, design, and how clothing relates to human behavior was the best. You really have to have an open mind and be ready to think outside the box. I really feel that my training in Fashion Merchandising has helped me with my job at Complex magazine. Having so much knowledge about fashion really helps. |

Accounting and Business / Management:
I love my major. Business in general is a fast growing field. I have always loved math and am a great people person so accounting was the perfect field for me. I make the money I need to support my family and myself. The hardest part about Accounting is that there is so much to do to meet the full potential of this field in the business world. After getting a Bachelor's I am working on my master's while getting the two years work experience that I need for my CPA and CMA. |

Human Resources Management / Personnel Administration, General:
If you are truly into human resources management, then by all means, choose this major. If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't choose this major because it's not what I truly want to do. I wish I had majored in English, with a minor in Art History. Bottom line: Pursue what you love, not what's practical (unless THAT'S what you love!) This is a good major to get your foot in the door if you're trying to get an entry level job with various business...most comopanies have an HR department. The cons are personal for me: It wasn't what I truly love to do. |

Business / Managerial Economics:
I earned my AA in Business and Management Studies.
I really enjoyed the Business classes I had to take and definitely would have been lost in Micro and Macroeconomics without the "Intro to Business Management" that you can but don't have to take at my school.
Accounting class wasn't too bad, it was a little like a puzzle, figuring out how to put the numbers in to get the right answer, but for me there being a definitive answer was a relief. A lot of college courses are about different people and opinions and never provide the absolute answer to a question.
Math and Statistics were a struggle, but manageable by keeping up with the course work and attending the extra sessions my teacher offered.
One of my favorite courses was Legal Environment of Business. It branched out to include the Law and Ethics of Business and that was fascinating.
Overall, I would say the degree is great, not only because it gives you a glimpse into how Economics really work but also because it gives you a good understanding of the Business world.
Now passively enduring the classes won't give you that perk, but if you actively participate and pay attention to the news, a lot of what you hear in class will repeat itself there and if you bring back questions to the course taken from real life, you will definitely learn a lot! |

Accounting:
Right now I'm taking accounting in Georgia CGTC. Although it is a technical college I find a lot of the teachers very helpful and professional. There are a few teachers that has brought the score down that I would have given them that. I just think there are a few areas that they could improve when it comes to teachers. |

Business Administration and Management, General:
If you really don't know anything about business, but have ambitions to climb the corporate ladder, this is a great major for you. It's also great if you don't have a particular interest in any of the hard sciences or softer humanities. Otherwise, pick something more specific to your interests and strengths. Review by white, middle-class male, graduated UC Berkeley 2007.
Business Administration (BusAd) is really a broad major - you can expect courses in Accounting, Finance, Organizational Behavior, Marketing, and Etiquette. You will learn a lot about the different aspects of corporate business, but don't expect to be an expert at anything when you graduate unless you elected to take a bunch of focus courses on your own. The students: If your school is anything like mine was, expect most of your fellow students to be in this for the money. They will be focusing on finance and accounting for investment banking and CPA jobs upon graduation, and won't really be interested in the material. Also expect lots of semi-friends, but few close ones. The material: Ranges in difficulty from stupidly easy (etiquette) to really hard (financial modelling) to somewhere in between, but subject to the professor's whims (organizational behavior and marketing). The potential: If you study hard, rank at the top of the class, and meet the right people, you can pull down $100k+ upon graduation, but your job will suck (12+ hour days, 0 creativity). The downside: Outside of finance and accounting, employers are more interested in what you have done and how you tackle problems than what you majored in. Additionally, if you've been thinking about an MBA, it's pretty much the same stuff with more focus on a particular area. The bottom line: If you want a foot in the door at a large finance or accounting firm, BusAd is great. If you want more creative and fulfilling work, or plan to get an MBA later, stick to a more focused program or a major related to your interests.
Other major options for business careers: Marketing - try sociology. HR or organizational behavior - try psychology. International business - political science or the area you are interested in (e.g. east asia). Sales - pick the product you want to sell and focus on that. |

Business Administration and Management, General:
I would recommend this major if you are unsure of the type of career you want to pursue but you know you want to work in business but not in a sales capacity. Most companies that want you to have a bachelors degree don't really care what the degree is in so a general business/management major is nice. However, as more types of specialized fields are opening up if you know you want to work in finance or project management I would opt for one of those as they will stand you in good stead as you pursue your career. |
