Architecture (BArch, BA / BS, MArch, MA / MS, PhD):
Architecture is definitely for the very devoted. You will spend many hours per day in the architecture studio, tackling design problems, building models, and creating drawings. It is a focused and very intense major, and it's not for people who are just looking for something to do. It takes commitment and an ungodly amount of time and energy to keep up with the workload.
Despite my sudden lack of social life, however, I really enjoyed my time as an architecture major. You learn a lot of computer programs which are useful for all kinds of professions, such as AutoCAD, the Adobe line of products, and 3D modeling programs. You also learn people skills and how to work in groups. You can go into almost any field with an architectural degree because of the wide variety of skills you'll learn.
I would definitely become an architecture major again if I had to redo my undergraduate career. It was a lot of fun despite all the hard work, and I made a lot of friends. My studio classmates became like an extended family, since we all spent so much time with one another, and we all trusted one another. We always knew that someone would be around to watch our backs, and to help us when we needed it.
Pros:
-Wide range of skills acquired
-Make lots of friends and contacts
Cons:
-Must be devoted at all times
-Almost no social life outside of studio |

Architecture (BArch, BA / BS, MArch, MA / MS, PhD):
The study of architecture is challenging and exciting. Through most collegial programs you obtain strong problem solving skills, the ability to think "outside the box", and the ability to begin creating aesthetically pleasing structures. I would highly recommend the major for students that have a lot of time, patience, and creativity. The courses required to complete the degree can be very demanding. Architecture students are often known to do "all nighters" in order to complete projects. Despite all the time and, sometimes, frustration involved in the coursework, the process is very rewarding. A degree in architecture can springboard into other fields of study (e.g. urban planning, law, engineering, etc) or into a great career as an architect. |

Architecture (BArch, BA / BS, MArch, MA / MS, PhD):
For those who wish to major in architecture must be sure they truly love it. BArch is a five year program and typically around 20% of the incoming class finish all five years. It is highly demanding with near impossible deadlines meant to push you to the edge, as well as truly showing what you are capable of. Consecutive nights without sleep is typical no matter how much you work ahead. This is an accurate disclaimer of what architecture students would experience at any school, but if your heart is in it, you'll still love the experience regardless. If I had to do it all over, I would definitely do it. The con is that it is a 5 year major, but the pro in that is that you can get your masters in a year or two. This major is also mandatory if you wish to become a licensed architect, no other major will qualify (except in NY). |
