International Relations and Affairs:
This major covers a variety of subjects, including political science, history, sociology, economics, and whatever language you choose. It's versatile in that, if you desire, you can choose to concentrate your studies on a particular country, region, time period, or subject matter pertaining to the world. Job-wise, it is flexible in that you can pursue graduate studies, become a lawyer, go into business or finance, or get into just about any other field you want, given the globalization of our world today. |

International Relations and Affairs:
Majoring in international relations was probably the single most fulfilling experience of my life. Not only are the possibilities for specialization virtually unlimited (in geographic, economic, political scope, etc.), but the number of fields that can be applied to the international arena are also limitless. This means that you can study a certain country, culture, or policy question from a variety of different angles, be it anthropologically, linguistically, or historiographically, to name a few.
Now, that said, international relations is not the major for everyone. You have to be able to work in a mental space that can seem very different from your everyday mindset. It also helps to be interested in a lot of different things. In fact, I think the people who get the most out of the field are those who can't quite decide what their interests are. This helps you to always see the different approaches toa given cultural problem or question or situation.
So if you like a challenge, can deal gracefully with ambiguity and sometimes "alien" circumstances, and love to meet and work with people from a culture different from your own, you can't really find a better choice for a major. |
